Visa collaborates with Good Transport and GHL to enable contactless payments in Cebu and Mandaue City modern jeepneys in first transit project in the Philippines

Wednesday, August 28, 2024

Visa cards can be used to pay on modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City, creating a seamless transit experience and inclusive acceptance for daily commuters and tourists in the Philippines

Visa, a world leader in digital payments, is collaborating with Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI), a transit mobility solutions provider, and GHL, a leading nationwide payment service provider and payment acquirer. This collaboration has enabled the use of Visa cards for payments on modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City, the second biggest city in Cebu.

The initiative kicked off today with an official launch ceremony at the Cebu IT Park Transport Terminal, with Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI) working in partnership with local transport operators, Lahug Apas Transport Cooperative (LATRANSCO) and Mandaue Transport Cooperative (MTC), to launch 120 modern jeepneys in Cebu and 20 modern jeepneys in Mandaue City. The onboard terminals in these vehicles now accept Visa payments. This initiative, part of a pilot project, signifies Visa's commitment to promoting transit acceptance in the Philippines with plans to expand to more modes of transit in coming years.

Jeff Navarro, Country Manager for Visa Philippines, said: "We are thrilled to unveil Visa's inaugural transit project in the Philippines. This initiative aims to enhance the travel experience for daily commuters and tourists in Mandaue City by offering a wider array of payment options. As tourism in the Philippines rebounds, we have observed a growth in inbound tourism and this partnership will make the transit experience more seamless for tourists. The future of transit, both globally and within the Philippines, is poised to create inclusivity through open-loop, contactless payment systems in public transit, and will be centered around providing commuters with seamless, convenient, and secure payment options.”

In February 2024, Cebu experienced a 69% year-on-year increase in visitors, welcoming 104,439 tourists, according to the Department of Tourism. Meanwhile, Mandaue City, a popular tourist destination in Cebu, recorded 228,472 tourist arrivals between January and September 2022. With such strong tourism growth, the ability to use Visa cards on public transit significantly enhances convenience, as travelers increasingly prefer secure, contactless digital payments. Visa's Global Travel Intentions Study highlights this shift, revealing that 97% of Asia Pacific travelers plan to use card payments (credit, debit, or prepaid) on their trips, while only 17% intend to carry foreign currency (cash).

Brezhnev Tero, CEO, Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI), said: “We are proud to partner with Visa and GHL to bring the first-of-its-kind contactless payment solution to the Philippines’ transport sector through our Transport Mobility Solution, the Bus Revenue Tracker System (BRTS). This groundbreaking collaboration not only revolutionizes fare collection with enhanced efficiency and security but also redefines the commuter experience. By leading the way in transport innovation, we are making every journey smoother, faster, and more convenient, setting a new standard for public transport in the country.”

Jay Tirona, CEO, GHL Systems Philippines Inc, said: “This partnership is an exciting example of how technology and digital innovation in payments can come together positively for the private and public sectors, and ultimately, for the benefit of Filipinos who ride these jeepneys every day. These efficiencies drive social and economic change and we need to start with a focused approach, which I believe will eventually and inevitably be adapted across public transport systems nationwide.”

Faster and more seamless travel through a cashless, open-loop system

The rapid urbanization across Asia Pacific, with 120,000 people moving to cities daily, has underscored the need for efficient public transit systems. Governments, including the Philippines, are investing in these systems as part of their strategies to mitigate road congestion, with a focus on simplifying public transit payments and increasing digital payment options.

Visa’s Global Urban Mobility survey found that 58% of commuters favor a unified payment method for all transport modes, as currently half of them use four or more different methods each month. Meanwhile, another Visa survey showed that implementing open-loop, contactless payment systems in public transit agencies creates a faster, safer, and more hygienic payment experience. Such a system promotes inclusivity and accessibility in public transit, even for those without access to traditional banking services, with modern payment systems simplifying fare processes for transit agencies, reducing costs and mitigating financial risks.

“With Visa making access to payments more inclusive, we are glad to be moving the needle in embracing innovative systems such as the open-loop payment system which significantly enhances the commuting experience for all,” Navarro added. “This approach not only makes urban mobility more efficient and secure but ensures that everyone, especially those underserved by traditional banking services, has access to seamless and reliable public transportation.”

Monday, August 26, 2024

Rosie Dominguez

Looking back on Rosie Dominguez's legacy after stepping down from her role as Executive Vice President for Alsons Development and Investment Corporation.

For over 30 years, Rosie A. Dominguez has been the driving force behind Alsons Development and Investment Corporation (Alsons Dev), Davao City's leading real estate developer. Her dedication, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence have not only propelled the company to new heights but also significantly shaped the landscape and enhanced the quality of life in Davao.

Following her retirement as Executive Vice President, it is fitting to look back on Rosie’s remarkable achievements and her lasting impact on Alsons Dev.

A legacy of pioneering developments

Ladislawa Garden Village

Ladislawa Garden Village, one of Rosie's earliest achievements, stands as a key milestone in Davao’s real estate history, being the city's first gated subdivision with leisure amenities.

Rosie’s tenure is highlighted by groundbreaking projects that have transformed residential living in Davao. A major milestone was the relaunch of the company’s initial residential project, Ladislawa, into Ladislawa Garden Village. This project was Davao's first themed residential community and the city's first subdivision with country club facilities, setting a high standard for future developments.

From 1994 to 2010, Alsons Dev built a reputation for exceptional living spaces by incorporating community-centric designs. Projects like Woodridge Park, Las Terrazas, Northcrest, Fernwood, Wood Lane, and Eden Ridge established the company as a leader in creating high-quality residential environments.

In 2013, Rosie led the development of Northtown, a vibrant township designed to meet the city's evolving needs. This was followed in 2016 by the introduction of a new mid-cost housing brand, Nurtura Land and Home, with Narra Park Residences as the maiden project.

Public Safety and Security Complex

The country’s first integrated emergency response facility, the Public Safety and Security Complex in Northtown Center, Cabantian, is a pioneering project donated to the City Government of Davao in 2016 that was especially close to Rosie’s heart.

The 2022 launch of Poblacion Market Central further diversified the company’s portfolio and enhanced the local shopping and dining experience. Poblacion is the new home of the shops from the Aldevinco Shopping Center, Alsons Dev’s pioneering shopping center that operated from 1965 to 2021.

Expanding beyond Davao, Alsons Dev also ventured into Alabel, Sarangani in 2023 with the launch of a master-planned, mixed-use township, Avia Estate, and Narra Park Residences Avia.

Celebrating Success and Excellence

Narra Park Residences

Exceptional communities like Narra Park Residences have been recognized by national real estate award-giving bodies, cementing Alsons Dev as one of Davao’s leading real estate developers.

Rosie’s exceptional leadership didn't go unnoticed, as Alsons Dev earned numerous recognitions under her guidance. From 2020 onwards, the company was named one of the top real estate developer partners at the BPI Partners Appreciation Night, honored as one of the top local developers in terms of title delivery and production.

Additionally, Narra Park Residences and Northtown Residences both received accolades from the 11th PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards and The Outlook 2023: Philippine Real Estate Awards by Lamudi, further demonstrating the company’s versatility and excellence in the real estate sector.

Passing the Torch

Rosie's influence extends beyond projects and awards. Her dedication has been key to establishing Alsons Dev as the leading real estate developer in Davao City, fostering a strong organization poised for continued success.

Rosie Dominguez (center) is joined by Miguel Dominguez, Alsons Dev’s new President and CEO (second from bottom left), and the company’s top executives. Under Rosie’s leadership, the team thrived, building a foundation of trust and collaboration that elevated Alsons Dev to new milestones.

Reflecting on her career, Rosie shared, “It’s been an incredible journey working alongside talented individuals to build Alsons Dev and positively impact Davao. Together, we’ve created thriving communities and a strong sense of belonging. I’m confident that our team will keep excelling and enhancing the lives of Mindanaoans for years to come.”

As Rosie retires, her son, Miguel Rene A. Dominguez, takes the helm as the new President and CEO of Alsons Dev. The young Dominguez has previously held various key roles within the Alcantara Group group of companies, bringing a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to his new position.

Miguel expressed, “My mother’s dedication and vision have profoundly shaped the company and the city. I am honored to continue her legacy of creating exceptional living environments and contributing to Davao City's growth.”

Rosie’s retirement marks the end of a significant era at Alsons Dev but also heralds a new chapter of growth and opportunity. With a solid foundation and a forward-looking vision, Alsons Dev is well-positioned to continue shaping Davao City’s landscape and delivering outstanding living experiences for future generations.

“From the original 18 scholars, we have expanded the list to 24 new scholars since more applicants have qualified at this time. It is our ardent hope that they will use this opportunity to forge their path to success and someday pay it forward. We are truly excited to embark on this journey with our scholars and their families, and to witness the great things they will do for society,” said GPULP Scholarship Foundation Vice President Michael Uy.

Apart from the holistic support for the scholars, their parents will also receive life skills training monthly. This way, the assistance is inclusive and sustainable for the entire family.

‘Set for the future’

Founded by businessmen brothers Gregorio Uy Jr. and Samuel Uy, the GPULP Scholarship Foundation has been extending grants to excellent yet underprivileged students in Isabela and Cagayan. It was named after their parents Gregorio P. Uy and Lee Peng.

In the last school year alone, 18 scholars have graduated, seven of which received Latin honors. Some are currently doing their review in preparation for their respective Board Examinations. All expenses during this time are still covered by the GPULP Scholarship Foundation.

Among these achievers, two were regional top-notchers in their respective Board Exams back in 2018. Alumni also enjoy high chances of employability in both the public and private sectors, a testament to the continued success of the program.

Alumnus Philip Salvador of the ISU Echague Main Campus was invited to the “LF: Scholar” Awarding Ceremony recently to impart a message of inspiration. He is now a Certified Public Accountant working for The Salvation Army Social Services Inc.

“This scholarship does not only help us financially but also supports us morally for us to really achieve our dreams. The monthly sessions taught us the value of discipline and motivated us to strive for excellence,” he said.

Among his peers, three are currently in supervisory and senior positions.

“To our dear scholars, the road ahead of you is still long so don’t let the gas run out—your passion and fire in whatever you do. Yes, it will be hard, but it will be worth it. I would like to thank the humble benefactors of the GPULPSF. Thank you for your generosity and support to us,” Salvador added.

Preserving Southeast Asia's Weaving Traditions and Balancing Cultural Heritage with Environmental Conservation

Southeast Asia is home to many cultural traditions, which gave birth to plenty of crafts centered around fabrics and weaving, a practice deeply intertwined with identity and heritage across the region.

In the Philippines, diverse weaving traditions thrive uniquely in different regions. Fabrics like the Ilocos' Abel using cotton fibers, South Cotabato's T’nalak using abaca fibers and the indigenous T’boli’s usage of abaca fiber for textile, and Palawan being the the forefront of the piƱa weaving industry all embody local stories and community values. These fabrics are not merely products; they are repositories of personal narratives of the weavers and embody cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

However, these traditions face challenges today, particularly from environmental degradation impacting natural material availability and, at the same time, textile production is also blamed for causing severe impact on the environment. Efforts are underway to ensure environmental sustainability and to engage younger generations in preserving these intricate weaving practices, crucial for safeguarding cultural continuity in the face of modern pressures.

Weaving conservation into a sustainable practice

In the Philippines, there are about 450 weaving groups, representing around 5,000 weavers who contributed an estimated P150 million to the country’s economy in 2020. Traditionally a personal activity, weaving has become a source of livelihood for many women, turning it into a cottage industry. While small, this industry plays a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and providing economic opportunities in rural communities, showcasing the skill and artistry of Filipino weavers to the world.

Industrialization, mass production, globalization, digitization, and even environmental degradation have pressured the weaving industry, driving changes in production technology and market access. Nevertheless, these advancements have also left many behind, including the weavers.

Margareta Mala's efforts in Indonesia showcase how weaving can preserve cultural heritage sustainably. In 2018, with growing interest in Tenun—a technique of making fabric by weaving different colors of threads using a traditional loom—Mala led young Iban women to revive the practice by blending tradition with conservation. She founded two communities: Endo Segadok for experienced weavers and Generasi Lestari to educate young Iban women. Together, 58 women are involved.

The community uses natural dyes from their forest to maintain cultural and conservation value, while factory-made threads replace the lost cotton plants. Sacred patterns requiring rituals are kept within the culture and not sold. Instead of selling, which requires rituals, they remain part of their culture and are not sold to customers.

They also use 'adopting' rather than 'purchasing' the fabric, emphasizing the unique relationship between the weavers and those who decide to adopt the product. This approach fosters a sense of connection and responsibility, as the adopter becomes the custodian of Iban culture for years to come.

Mala and her community have made significant strides in generating alternative income and empowering young Iban women to pursue weaving or organizing tours as their primary source of livelihood. This not only provides an alternative to working at plantations but also enhances their overall quality of life. Mala expressed hope that their efforts and outcomes can serve as a valuable model for communities, both locally and globally, emphasizing the significance of conservation and sustainability and their impact on those involved in traditional weaving.

To ensure that the community benefits equitably, the revenues generated are distributed among community members. Presently, the tenun produced by Mala and her community is priced between IDR 3,000,000 and 10,000,000 (US$300-US$700).

Similarly, the Philippines has long been at the forefront of natural textile development, championing the use of Philippine Tropical fabrics made from cotton, pineapple, abaca, and bamboo, woven and treated using low-impact or natural dyeing methods. The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) continues to develop these methods to foster a more sustainable textile industry—a collective effort involving the government, academia, industry, and communities.

The narrative of Mala and her community, integrating culture into conservation efforts, serves as a valuable lesson for other Southeast Asian communities, particularly those led by women. The involvement of everyone in conservation efforts that support the most affected communities is crucial, especially when it presents an opportunity to preserve and adopt a piece of cultural heritage.

SM Prime widens the landscape in renewable energy

Wednesday, July 31, 2024

As part of its net-zero commitment by 2040, one of Asia’s leading real estate and property developers, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), partnered with global integrated energy company TotalEnergies for the installation of a 2 Megawatt-peak (MWp) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System Rooftop project in Pasay City.

The partnership venture aligns with SM Prime’s efforts in expanding its renewable energy portfolio and affirms TotalEnergies’ commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions in various urban settings.

Designed with a power yield of 3,000 Megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity annually, the solar partnership project has over 3,672 PV panels installed and is expected to provide huge cost savings for SM Prime. Located at the MOA Square in the Mall of Asia Complex, the solar installations are expected to reduce the building’s carbon footprint by about 1,430 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

"SM Prime is proud to work alongside TotalEnergies on this project. This partnership is our commitment to sustainability and achieving Net Zero by 2040. We are also taking a proactive stance in supporting the Department of Energy’s (DOE) target of reaching 35% renewable energy by 2030. Together, we’re driving meaningful change towards a more environmentally conscious future," said John Nai Peng Ong, SM Prime Chief Finance Officer.

“We are thrilled to announce the successful deployment of solar rooftop installations at the Mall of Asia in the Philippines, marking a significant achievement in both environmental and economic sustainability for SM Prime,” said Elodie Renaud, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation Asia.

For the past few years, SM Prime continues to grow its partnerships with key clean energy players, leveraging its relationships and earned experiences to drive its environmental stewardship campaign. Capitalizing on these partnerships has provided for SM Prime huge economic, environmental, and social dividends.

In 2022, SM Prime secured a long-term deal with AboitizPower for its clean energy supply. Under the agreement, AboitizPower will provide reliable and responsibly-sourced energy from Tiwi-MakBan Geothermal Power Plants, and PV Sinag’s Power Plants, operated and managed by AboitizPower subsidiary, Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. (ARI).

The following year, SM Prime signed a memorandum of agreement with Citicore Renewable Energy Company (CREC), wherein SM Prime will source 90 megawatts (MWac) from CREC’s upcoming Lumbangan Solar Power Plant in Tuy, Batangas.

Apart from contributing to the DOE’s 35% renewable energy goal by 2030, all these partnerships are aligned with the energy department and Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) policy of expanding the adoption of Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) in the energy industry.

AIA Healthiest Schools

AIA Philippines, formerly Philam Life and one of the country’s largest life insurance companies, has partnered with Corazon S. Atayde Memorial Foundation (CSAFM) to bring the AIA Healthiest Schools program to underserved elementary and secondary public schools. This program, which AIA is bringing to the Philippines after successful launches in other countries such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia, aims to empower students aged five to sixteen and their teachers to adopt healthier living habits.

AIA Healthiest Schools offers free curriculum-linked teaching resources to schools, with the goal of educating students about healthy habits and assisting schools and communities in creating a healthier and happier environment. It is structured around four key pillars: healthy eating; active lifestyle; mental well-being; and health and sustainability.

In its first year, AIA Philippines will introduce AIA Healthiest Schools in three public elementary schools and three public high schools. The program extends beyond the classroom, encouraging participating schools to develop and implement impactful health projects within their communities. These projects will be showcased in a regional competition in July 2025, where schools will have the opportunity to compete with schools from other countries where AIA is present.

AIA Healthiest Schools is the first of its kind health literacy program, combining education and rewarding good behavior which will revolutionize health-related programs and sustainability in schools. "We believe that taking a proactive role in building healthy habits among the youth is one of the best ways we can to bring to life our Purpose of helping people live Healthier, Longer Better Lives," said Melissa Henson, AIA Philippines Chief Marketing Officer. "By collaborating with CSAMF and public schools nationwide, we are not only empowering students to adopt healthier habits, but also creating opportunities for communities to develop a lasting appreciation for well-being.”

CSAFM is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide reliable, responsible, and trustworthy avenues of generosity by developing and implementing programs focused on education. It has reached 54,043 learners across the country and worked with almost 1,000 community coordinators and volunteers.

AIA Healthiest Schools directly aligns with AIA's ambitious One Billion Goal, which aims to engage, inspire, and empower one billion people worldwide to live healthier, longer, better lives. Through this program, AIA Philippines is taking a significant step towards creating a healthier and more vibrant future for young Filipinos.

Bangsamoro Government lays out commitments to improve education in the BARMM

Madrasah Education Strategic Pla

The Bangsamoro Government celebrated the signing of the Madrasah Education Strategic Plan for the Bangsamoro region on 18 July 2024. The Plan lays out the commitments of the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education to enhance the quality of formal madrasah education in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in the next three years.

Madrasah is an Islamic educational system that aims to develop Muslim learners to be morally upright and committed to excellence. The Ministry recognizes madrasah education’s significant role in contributing to the peace and stability, and the future development of the BARMM. The goal is to develop future Muslim professionals and innovators who could drive economic growth, peace, and stability in the region.

The Australian Government provided technical assistance to the Ministry in developing the Plan. They conducted policy reviews of madrasah education, led consultation sessions with relevant partners, and facilitated expert consultations to support the drafting process.

“As neighbours and strategic partners, Australia and the Philippines share the goal of achieving a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region – and we believe that education plays a vital role in achieving this,” said Dr Moya Collett, Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Embassy.

“I thank our friends and partners from the Ministry for their continued dedication in strengthening education policies and institutions in the BARMM. Australia remains committed to working with you in shaping a more peaceful and prosperous region.”

Under the Plan, the Ministry aims to increase the number of Bangsamoro learners – regardless of gender, physical ability, and social and economic status – by 30%. By 2025, they also aim to increase the number of formal madrasah institutions by 15%. Institutionalizing madrasahs is important because it allows the Ministry to monitor and regulate the quality of education and services they provide.

The Ministry has made great strides in integrating traditional madrasah into the Bangsamoro education system. To date, 373 formal madrasah delivering K-12 and Islamic education have been recognised. A policy guide developed with the Australian Government is also supporting the accreditation of 444 non formal madrasah. The Ministry also have plans to develop a standardised curriculum for all madrasahs, including non-formal madrasas, with the aim of accrediting them down the road.

Mohagher M. Iqbal, Minister of MBHTE said: “Strengthening madrasah education represents 'unity in diversity.' It demonstrates Bangsamoro’s firm commitment to preserving our region's rich historical, religious, and educational heritage while creating an inclusive environment where every learner, regardless of background, can succeed.”

“Madrasah education is integral to our people’s aspiration to shape our educational policies and systems. Therefore, the Bangsamoro deserves genuine autonomy that all parties should honor. A thriving autonomy is the true solution to the recurring internal conflicts in the region.”

Schneider Electric introduces scalable decarbonization roadmap for PH manufacturing, donates P5M worth of equipment to Dualtech

Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and digital automation, announced a scalable decarbonization roadmap for the manufacturing sector in the Philippines during the recent Go Industry 2024: Driving towards a Net Zero Industry event held at The Mills Country Club, Laguna co-hosted with Dualtech Training Center Foundation, Inc.

The event was attended by leaders from the Laguna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Climate Change Commission (CCC) Philippines, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Dr. Song Pei Chua, Business Development Manager for Chemicals, Schneider Electric East Asia discusses the decarbonization roadmap for the Philippine manufacturing sector.

The decarbonization roadmap outlines four key strategies that the sector can implement gradually to reduce carbon footprint:
  • Electrifying operations through microgrid optimization
  • Reducing energy consumption through digitalization and automation
  • Replacing energy sources with renewable energy such as solar energy, wind power, and hydropower
  • Engaging the entire value chain to design and build for sustainability and to offset carbon emissions, enabling a circular economy

"Our approach to decarbonization involves not just transforming our energy supply but also optimizing our processes through electrification," said Dr. Song Pei Chua, Business Development Manager for Chemicals, Schneider Electric East Asia. "Strategic planning, digitization, and a steadfast commitment to efficiency and sustainability are at the core of manufacturing and industrial operations."

Schneider Electric's Sustainability Business Team helps industries achieve their carbon neutrality targets by developing customized digital-centric strategies. They provide advisory services to establish a baseline, understand current energy use, and create a comprehensive roadmap towards carbon neutrality.

Deployment of Schneider Electric’s proprietary and award-winning cloud-based platform EcoStruxure Resource Advisor helps collect and analyze energy consumption data. With this, businesses can develop better energy and sustainability strategies. Software trainings are conducted by Schneider Electric to help educate partners on how to maximize the software to enable effective application into their operations.

During the event, CCC and UNDP both emphasized the significant role the private sector plays in achieving the country's climate goals. “Shifting to digital operations is crucial for sectors aiming to reduce carbon emissions and meet the targets established by the nationally determined contribution (NDC) implementation plan," CCC Executive Assistant Raul Villegas stated.

Schneider Electric Empowering Youth to Drive Digital Transformation

Schneider Electric's commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental initiatives. This is demonstrated by the company’s 5-year partnership with Dualtech where Schneider Electric has committed to provide PHP5 million worth of equipment and instructor training.

Dualtech, accredited by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), offers a 2-year Electromechanics Technology course combining electrical, mechanical, and electronics disciplines. In response to the global demand for skilled workers, the institution is modernizing its training programs and facilities to accommodate more scholars and to address shortages of training equipment and tools.

The company aims to be carbon neutral in operations by 2025, save 800 million tons of carbon annually by 2030, achieve full value chain carbon neutrality by 2040, and reach net zero across all scopes by 2050—urging the manufacturing sector and other industries to follow suit. Recently, TIME Magazine has hailed Schneider Electric as the “Most Sustainable Company in the World”.

Right to Care Card

To celebrate #PrideMonth, the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) invited communication experts at its 2nd General Membership Meeting (GMM) last June 28 to talk about the importance of championing diversity in workplace communication as well as fostering an inclusive environment.

Dubbed “Speak Out, Stand Out: Championing Diversity in Workplace Communication,” the event held at the DivinaLaw offices in Makati City featured key speakers from MullenLowe TREYNA, the agency that won last year's Grand Anvil Award for the Quezon City Gender and Development Council's Right to Care Card.

The “Right to Care Card,” which was passed into an ordinance by the Quezon City Council in February this year, now works as a Special Power of Attorney (SPA) card that can grant medical-decision making rights to queer couples. It serves as portable proof that having the right to care for your loved ones should not be limited to a specific gender.

Spearheading the discussion was Jam Pascual, a seasoned copywriter at MullenLowe TREYNA, who talked about how the concept for the campaign all began. He shared, “What is care? Our team wanted to get the idea across that the ‘Right to Care’ card relates deeply to ideas and experiences that the average Filipino can understand. We wanted to convey the importance of such concepts as pag-aalaga and malasakit.”

Three other communication experts shared their insights about the initiative, with each one emphasizing how authentic story-telling and using just the right words to communicate the card’s basic concept of “the right to care” among partners – regardless of sexual orientation – is key to the success of the program.

“A factor in the Right to Care initiative’s success is its straightforward concept -- the basic premise of allowing human beings to care for one another. The support and recognition it had been getting may be attributed to simple, authentic, and heartfelt storytelling,” explained Gerald Lim, PR Head of Accounts at MullenLowe TREYNA.

“But of course, communications can only do so much! We also need the support of the community for diversity and inclusivity to flourish,” he added.

Sharing insights from a legal perspective, DivinaLaw Associate Atty. Joshy Aguilar stated, “I think we should be more empathic towards the plight of others. Just because you don't experience the same struggle does not mean that it does not exist or that it’s not real. Even the Supreme Court held that the 1987 Philippine Constitution is capable of accommodating a contemporaneous understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics or SOGIESC.”

Krystel YbaƱez, a Senior Art Director at MullenLowe TREYNA, for her part, shared, “The team behind Right to Care is made up of queers and allies. We have brave and supportive leaders in the office who encouraged us to make this happen. That’s why diversity, equality, and inclusion are very important in workplace communication.”

PRSP continues to uphold the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion, recognizing their importance in effective workplace communication and community support. As part of the organization’s #PRforAll theme this year, the alliance is now actively encouraging all communication practitioners to champion the values of diversity, equality and inclusivity in their respective fields.
