Bossjob UP Fair 2025

In a vibrant blend of music, youth, and meaningful advocacy, Bossjob, the Philippines’ leading AI-powered, chat-first recruitment platform, joined this year’s UP Fair 2025 not as a career expo participant—but as a lifestyle ally, brand champion, and changemaker.

Held from April 2 to 5, 2025, at the University of the Philippines - Diliman, UP Fair is one of the country’s biggest university-led events, with over 50,000 attendees across four days. For Bossjob, the opportunity to immerse in this energetic, cause-driven environment signaled more than a traditional brand activation—it was a statement of intent: to meet the next generation of talents where they are, with tools and support they can actually use.

A Career Platform That Doesn’t Wait for the Career Fair

Bossjob’s participation marked its first foray into a non-career-focused youth event, breaking the mold of traditional job portals. Instead of limiting its presence to job fairs or corporate-led activations, Bossjob brought its advocacy for access and equity in hiring straight to a creative, youth-centered platform.

Through an interactive booth experience that offered free ice cream, cotton candy, and exclusive giveaways, Bossjob attracted over 2,000 attendees eager to engage with the platform. New users were encouraged to download the app, like the Facebook page, register their profiles, and explore its innovative features—all while enjoying a sweet treat and a welcoming space to talk careers.

A Platform for Everyone: From Blue-Collar to “Open Collar” Careers

Visitors explored Bossjob’s tech-forward features, including:

● Direct to Chat with Recruiters – a feature that puts job seekers in immediate contact with hiring managers

● AI Resume Analysis – smart feedback to help users improve their resumes

● AI CV & AI Photo Generator – creative tools that help users present themselves more confidently and professionally

The app’s inclusive approach—designed for ALL—was fully on display. Bossjob reinforced its commitment to providing job seekers with free, easy-to-use, and meaningful tech to land the roles they deserve.

Advocacy in Action: Aligning with the UP Fair’s Daily Themes

True to the spirit of UP Fair, Bossjob integrated its mission with the event’s daily advocacies:

● Day 1 – Kalye Tunes (Urban Poor): Advocating for equal job opportunities for underserved sectors

● Day 2 – Quests (Women & Gender): Championing inclusive hiring and gender equity in the workplace

● Day 3 – Elements (Peasants): Providing access to dignified work for all

● Day 4 – REV Music Festival (National Minorities): Exploring partnerships to extend recruitment access to marginalized groups

● Overall Fair Theme – Education: Reinforcing Bossjob’s commitment to supporting students as they transition from campus to career

“UP Fair was the perfect space to engage young people not just as job seekers but as future leaders, creatives, and community-builders,” said Ibon Ma. Laya Toledo, Marketing Director of Bossjob PH. “We weren’t there just to promote the Bossjob platform and its services. We were there to champion career accessibility, digital empowerment, and real options for real people.”

Building Careers with Culture and Community

Beyond downloads and giveaways, Bossjob’s presence was about building a meaningful relationship with the country’s next workforce. By planting its flag at UP Fair 2025, Bossjob isn’t just offering a faster way to find a job—it’s offering a fresh, inclusive, tech-enabled way to build a career.

As Bossjob continues to scale its presence nationwide, it remains focused on one goal: to be the recruitment platform that makes job hunting smarter, more human, and more hopeful.

Emirates’ Aircrafted KIDS initiative reaches 700 young students across Asia

Saturday, April 19, 2025

Emirates donated handmade children’s backpacks made from upcycled aircraft interiors to children in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan

Supporting children’s education and making meaningful connections within the communities it serves, Emirates has engaged with several educational entities across Asia; to provide 700 handmade schoolbags and essential stationery supplies directly to young students. Each schoolbag is a piece of history—a limited-edition bag from Emirates’ Aircrafted range, made from the fabrics and parts of Emirates’ iconic aircraft. With 1300 bags already distributed across Africa, the Asia Aircrafted KIDS delivery is part of a larger initiative by Emirates to repurpose and upcycle materials for the benefit of children across the globe.

Aircrafted Kids by Emirates goes to Asia

In India, Emirates collaborated with Smile Foundation India, a respected institution that provides education, healthcare, and livelihood programs to children aged between 6-14 years. In Bangladesh, Emirates partnered with Kanan, Thikana (Shelter Home), and Ahsania Mission Shishu Nagari – three sister entities across Dhaka that provide shelter for women and children, and a safe place to nurture education and wellbeing. In Pakistan, Emirates worked with SOS Children’s Villages, a renowned entity which serves local communities by creating a nurturing and inspirational space for financially disadvantaged youths to continue their education. In the Philippines, Emirates has been a long-time partner of Virlanie Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to help disadvantaged children reach their full potential and reintegrate them into society. Through the Emirates Airline Foundation, Emirates has a long history of supporting children’s welfare programs, and Aircrafted Kids is an extension of this work.

Emirates has a local office in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, so each entity was visited by the Emirates representatives who helped pack the bags and distribute them and were eager to connect with the organizations who do such important work in the community. Inside the bags, Emirates provided school supplies such as stationary, calculators and essentials, as well as a variety of books that can be shared throughout schools.

The next stop on the Aircrafted Kids schoolbags trail is Egypt, with more destinations in the MENA region to follow.

The making of Aircrafted Kids schoolbags

As part of an environmental strategy that includes responsible consumption, Emirates committed to repurposing more than 50,000 kilograms of materials, from 205 aircraft that are undergoing a cabin interior refit and refresh. The team at Emirates Engineering brainstormed a myriad of ways in which the old materials could be reused and upcycled and settled on a range of sturdy backpacks. The high-quality seat fabric of Emirates Economy Class seats is 95% wool and 5% nylon, a flat weave structure sourced from Germany and Ireland which is ideal for upcycling due to its durability and non-flammable nature.

In a dedicated workshop at Emirates, a team of 14 Engineering Maintenance Assistants creatively designed and tailored a whole range of backpacks for children of different ages. The Emirates Corporate Communications, Marketing & Brand team then identified charitable entities, schools and foundations, where the bags could be distributed for most impact, communicating with the NGOs on what their preferences would be. The teams spent weeks researching styles, ensuring the bags were safe and comfortable for children to use. Across all the bag designs, the fabrics were professionally laundered, then further deep cleaned by hand, leather-conditioned for the accents, and thoroughly disinfected before being sewn into unique pieces. Brand new lining was added to the bags, along with functional zippers and adjustable straps, before being packed into specially branded ‘Aircrafted Kids’ boxes and shipped to their final destinations.

With the transport and logistics fully supported by Emirates’ SkyCargo teams, and dnata Logistics across the continents – Aircrafted Kids by Emirates connected the community of employees within Emirates to achieve a meaningful goal.

Aircrafted by Emirates Limited Edition Luggage for sale

Emirates fans can also get involved in this ‘connecting communities’ initiative, by purchasing limited edition luggage in the coming months, as the Aircrafted by Emirates retail range prepares to launch a second phase of the capsule collection. Like the first collection, which sold out in a matter of days - proceeds after costs are donated to Emirates Airline Foundation supporting humanitarian projects around the world. Customers and fans can also donate to Emirates Airline Foundation any time, and help children in need.

Empowered Women, Empowering Generations: ‘Ladies for a Cause’ Launches to Champion Maternal and Child Health

A powerful movement dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of mothers and children took center stage at The Manila Hotel with the official launch of Ladies for a Cause. Composed of strong, passionate, and driven women from various sectors, the initiative aims to make a lasting impact on maternal and child health, particularly during the critical first 1,000 days of life—from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday.

Dr. Gwen Pang, Convenor of Ladies for a Cause, who is also the Secretary General of the Philippine Red Cross, emphasized the significance of collective action, stating:

“When women come together, we don’t just spark change—we build movements that transform lives. ‘Ladies for a Cause’ is more than just a group; it is a force for good, ensuring that no mother or child is left behind in the fight for health, dignity, and a better future.”

Why Women? Why This Movement?

Women are the heart of every home and the backbone of every community. They are natural caregivers, nurturers, and decision-makers who intimately understand the needs of families. Their ability to empathize, multitask, and find solutions uniquely positions them to address the challenges of maternal and child health.

“Women don’t just witness the struggles of mothers and children—they live them, understand them, and know how to solve them. When women take action, they don’t work alone; they mobilize, they inspire, and they create lasting change. This is why ‘Ladies for a Cause’ is a movement led by women—because when women lead with purpose, entire generations benefit,” Dr. Pang added.

The launch was further strengthened by the support of Attorney Joey Lina, President of The Manila Hotel and Convenor of the Children’s First 1,000 Days Coalition, who underscored the importance of this advocacy:

“A nation’s future is shaped in the womb. By prioritizing maternal and child health, we are investing in stronger families, healthier communities, and a more resilient Philippines. This movement is a beacon of hope, proving that when women lead with purpose, the impact is boundless.”

The event gathered influential women leaders from government, business, media, and civil society, all committed to driving change and championing the health and well-being of mothers and children. The initiative will focus on advocacy, education, and direct community interventions to ensure that every child gets the healthiest possible start in life.

As Ladies for a Cause takes its first step, it calls on more women to stand together, take action, and be part of a movement that will leave an indelible mark on future generations.

TNT's SIM Registration video wins back-to-back golds at ADFEST 2025

Thursday, April 10, 2025

TNT, the value brand of PLDT mobile wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), won another gold award for its viral SIM Registration video, “Mother,” at ADFEST 2025, Asia's renowned international festival of advertising creativity.

This year, it won the prestigious gold award in the Effective Lotus category, continuing its winning streak after grabbing the gold award in the Film Lotus category last year, besting around 200 entries.

Produced in collaboration with advertising agency GIGIL and production company Arcade Film Factory, the one-minute and 28-second video tells the story of a mother soaked in the rain outside their house because her family could not recognize her mobile number.

True to its brand essence, TNT’s campaign used absurd humor to encourage subscribers to register their SIMs, in accordance to SIM Registration Act, which was enacted to protect mobile phone users from spam and scam texts, which have become rampant since the pandemic.

ADFEST described the Effective Lotus category winner as “works that are not only creative, but also have significant and measurable impact.” The juries based the recognition on four criteria, including Creativity/Idea/Insight with 30%; Strategy with 15%; Execution with 15%; and Results with 40%.

Launched in April 2023, TNT’s SIM Registration campaign videos immediately gained over 100 million views across social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, with viewers organically sharing them for being “unskippable,” “creative,” and “funny”. Within just 10 days since the videos were posted, over 7 million subscribers registered their SIM, proving the campaign’s effectiveness.

A string of local and international awards

As of end-2024, TNT remains the biggest mobile brand in the Philippines with almost 35 million subscribers.

“We thank our colleagues in the marketing and advertising industry in the region for recognizing TNT’s efforts to inform and protect our customers,” said Lloyd R. Manaloto, FVP at Smart. “We share this accolade with our almost 35 million subscribers who continue to put their trust in TNT,” he added.

TNT's back-to-back ADFEST gold awards adds to its string of local and international recognition for the campaign's creativity and effectiveness. It bagged a gold in Stevies 2024; silver awards at the 2024 APAC Effie Awards, Kidlat Awards 2024, and Boomerang 2023 Awards; crystal awards in South Korea’s MAD Stars 2023; and a bronze in Tambuli 2024.

Moreover, the campaign won the ‘Force for Good’ Award in the 2024 YouTube Works Awards Philippines and was cited as Best Ad of the Week by Bestads. The viral video was also shortlisted at the prestigious New York Festivals 2023 Advertising Awards.

The ADFEST 2025 Effective Lotus gold award is another milestone for TNT, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Aptly called “AniberSaya 25,” TNT lives true to its promise of being the people’s mobile brand as it caters to the mobile needs of ordinary Filipinos through its superior mobile network, affordable and value-packed data offers, and fun-filled experiences.

Avian Influenza: A Growing Threat to Poultry and Public Health

Avian Influenza

Avian Influenza (AI) is emerging as a potential crisis, with recent reports confirming three active H5N1 cases affecting nine farmers in Tarlac, Pampanga, and Nueva Ecija.

This year, a total of 99 municipalities have reported bird flu cases, leading to outbreaks among various poultry species in Pampanga, Kalinga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, and Leyte Province. The emergence of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza threatens human and animal health, as well as the country’s poultry production and livelihood.

Recognizing the urgency of this issue, the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI) and Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc. organized a roundtable discussion on “The Urgency of Vaccines in Preventing Avian Influenza in the Philippines.” The event brought together experts from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Department of Agriculture (DA) to discuss the vital role of vaccination, the current state of AI prevention efforts, and the challenges of implementing sustainable disease control strategies.

“With the increasing threat of avian influenza, Boehringer Ingelheim underscores the urgent need for robust biosecurity measures. We must take immediate action to effectively control the spread of the disease and safeguard both the agricultural sector and public health,” said Raul Senedrin, Head of Business Segment – Poultry at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc.

Protecting Livelihoods: The Threat of Bird Flu in the Poultry Sector

The poultry sector is a vital component of the Philippine economy, valued at Php 68.76 billion value, providing livelihoods and contributing to the country’s agricultural production.

As poultry demand rises, the sector confronts significant challenges due to the increasing risk of bird flu. A broiler breeder chicken farm in Leyte Province experienced an outbreak, resulting in 4,475 casualties from a flock of 60,259 birds.

In support of the industry, Boehringer Ingelheim donated Avian Influenza test kits in 2023 to trade and partner stakeholders in Luzon and Mindanao as part of the surveillance efforts to track the presence of the disease.

On 12 August 2024, the Food and Agriculture Organization issued a regional alert highlighting the persistent threat of bird flu to the poultry industry, warning that the ongoing outbreaks could drive up production costs, increase consumer prices, and cause potential supply shortages.

“The poultry industry plays a vital role in ensuring stable food supply and supporting the economic sustainability of rural communities in the Philippines. Through this roundtable, GPCCI helped identify forward-looking solutions, and we remain committed to fostering continued collaboration to strengthen the sector’s resilience against Avian Influenza,” said GPCCI President Marie Antoinette Mariano.

Safeguarding Farmers from Rising Public Health Risks

Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, primarily spreads among poultry, waterfowls such as ducks and geese, and livestock, increasing the risk of exposure for poultry workers and farmers.

This viral exposure has led to 887 H5N1 infections and 462 fatalities in humans from 2003 to April 14, 2024, with the majority occurring in Asia and Africa. Previous infections have led to complications such as conjunctivitis, gastrointestinal symptoms, encephalitis (brain inflammation) and encephalopathy.

The World Health Organization warns that the virus may mutate to become more contagious among humans, heightening public health concerns. These warning signs indicate that avian influenza could escalate into an emergency, potentially causing severe economic losses, undermining food security, and posing significant public health risks nationwide.

The escalating threat of Avian Influenza calls for an urgent, coordinated response among stakeholders, including government agencies, health organizations, and the agricultural sector, to safeguard communities and mitigate the impact of Avian Influenza. Prioritizing vaccination and health monitoring mitigates risks, sustains livelihoods, and prevents potential pandemics.

“Germany is continuing to support the Philippines’ effort to fight Avian Influenza. Germany and the Philippines share a long history of exchange in the fields of public health, food security, international trade as well as the support of livelihoods in the Philippines, says Dr. David Klebs, Economic Counsellor of the Germany Embassy Manila. “German businesses like Boehringer may provide a suitable solution to Avian Influenza making available scientific-based solutions to the Philippines.”

Online celebs share Smart ways to parent your kids in the digital age

Wednesday, March 26, 2025

While the internet provides kids with access to a wealth of educational materials, creative tools, and opportunities for connection, parents still need to guide their children to safely navigate the online world.

This is why Smart is strengthening its campaign for responsible digital parenting and child protection. Recently, it gathered parents who are also content creators for a ‘Family Day’ at its flagship store in Mandaluyong City to discuss and share their best practices when it comes to guiding their kids every time they go online.

The event coincided with the launch of the Smart Junior Plan, a first-of-its-kind postpaid plan designed to enable parents and their children to stay connected while providing access to a curated suite of kid-friendly apps and a safer browsing experience with PLDT and Smart’s Child Protection Platform.

Here are some insightful parenting tips mommies and daddies can adopt to keep their children safe in the digital space:

1. Set limits to screentime and guide them on what sites are safe to visit.

Louise Santos(@mommypracticality) has sons aged 8, 14, and 21. While her two boys in high school and college can now discern which sites are safe and not, her youngest son’s use of gadgets is still regulated.

“We really talk about the sites that they can visit or not,” she shares. “That also applies to us because we have to teach by example.”

For her part, preschool teacher Celine Cornejo (@teachercelineph), who has two boys and one girl aged 2, 10, and 12, restricts her children from using their mobile phones during school nights and only allows them access on a Friday, after school, until the weekend. “Kaya kapag Friday, excited na sila.”

Meanwhile, model-turned-host Kelly Misa-Fernandez (@kellymisa) shares her nine-year-old son has had access to the Internet since he was five “but very restricted.” “We would always be watching what he would consume online and nowadays since he has school and we want him to focus on school, weekends lang pwede, unless it’s a chill week,” she says.

2. Tell kids not to talk to strangers online.

Celine also taught her children not to share their personal information such as their names, address, contact details, and passwords. On top of this, she told them her boys, who are old enough to use gadgets to “never ever talk to strangers.”

“I always remind my kids that there are people out there, they pretend to be kids, that chat with you, but in reality, they are adults,” Celine shares.

3. Teach kids that not everything they read online is true.

Celine also had a tough discussion with her kids about looking up online on her health condition. “When I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, my husband and I talked to our kids. We told them that, ‘I know you guys are smart kids, but I know you tend to consult Dr. Google’,” she recalls.

“So, I told them that whatever you read online, it doesn’t mean that it will apply with my condition because each patient is unique. And Dr. Google, of course, is not my doctor. I have the best oncologist that they can talk to or consult with, or if they have any questions, they can ask us, their parents, so for our family, our digital measure also overlaps with our social net and emotional support,” she adds.

4. Connect before you correct.

Louise also underscored the importance of building trust with her children. “We go back to having a very honest, open communication where they see us, as parents, as their safety net. Parang tayo ‘yung safe place nila na they can call us on anything, everything kasi before you correct your children, you should first connect,” she said.

Events host Eri Neeman (@erineeman), who has an eight-year-old son, echoes Louise. “Kasi how can your children come to you kung takot siyang pumunta sa’yo? Like kung may masamang mangyari kasi parati mo siyang pinapagalitan, walang connection, walang relationship, how would I feel confident na pwedeng kausapin si Mommy, si Daddy?” Eri says.

He adds that parents also need to be self-aware and assess the parenting styles they might have inherited from their parents. “How can we heal and nurture this person kung ‘yung inner child natin hindi pa healed? Kasi you can’t pour from an empty cup, ‘di ba?”

5. Embrace technology and have fun with your kid in the digital world.

Robin Cruz, one half of the father-and-son duo of @anythingarticulated on TikTok, says that he uses the digital world to strengthen his bond with his eight-year-old kid, Gabe. “We do unboxing ng mga toys, ‘yun yung bonding namin. Ang rule lang namin, during lunch and dinner, no gadgets are allowed,” he shares.

“Na-su-supervise naman namin ano ‘yung nilalaro niya at pinapanood sa YouTube,” Robin says, who adds that him being an Elementary Education graduate also has prepared him for teaching his child, not only in academics, but also in having discipline for following rules.

Kelly relates to Robin, saying that she also geeks out with her kid. “So, when it comes to the games he plays, he likes Mario Bros. and I grew up with Mario Bros. ‘Buti na lang he likes it, hindi ko talaga pinilit, but he’s like obsessed,” she happily shares. Kelly also learned that her son is into ’80s music when she checked her Spotify playlist, another shared interest with her kid. “So parang it’s a positive spin for me, I take it in a very positive way, but I am aware na may mga scary things out there.”

Mommy content creator Ulya Nikita (@ulyanikitaa), who is navigating parenting as a young mom using digital tools, loves the idea that her six-year-old son can now chat with her online. “Parang kinikilig ako when I get a notification - what? That’s my baby!”

Ulya admits that she found playing with her son challenging at first. “As an adult, kids’ games can be repetitive, so I always look for different ways to enjoy playtime, like instead of traditional play I like looking for video games we can play together instead.

She also emphasizes having a direct line with your kid can give you peace of mind while recalling the time she could not contact her son’s adult companion. “There was a time I could not contact his companion, and it sent me panicking. So for your small child to be able to have access to a mode of communication to you, the parent, I feel like it is so, so important,” Ulya says.

Looking ahead, she expressed her hope for Ever Bilena to become a net-zero company within the next decade, ensuring that consumers can support a brand actively working to offset its environmental impact.

During the open forum, she advised small business owners to focus on authentic branding, purpose-driven messaging, and affordability to stand out in a competitive market. When asked how women can excel in business, she stressed the importance of self-confidence and trusting one’s own decisions, as personal belief is the foundation of success.

Mayor Joy Belmonte on financial independence and women’s economic empowerment

Quezon City mayor Joy Belmonte delivered the closing remarks for the morning session, focusing on violence against women and the role of financial independence in breaking cycles of abuse. She emphasized that economic empowerment gives women the ability to make independent choices, support their families, and build a secure future.

She highlighted the significant rise in women-led businesses in Quezon City, with over 4,000 new enterprises since 2021, now comprising 40% of the city’s 70,000 businesses. The city’s initiatives, such as Pangkabuhayang QC and Tindahan ni Ate Joy, have helped women launch and sustain their own businesses, providing them with financial security and opportunities for growth.

Mayor Belmonte encouraged attendees to recognize the progress made by women in business and governance while continuing to push for gender equality.

“Malayo na, pero malayo pa,” she remarked, emphasizing that while women have come far, there is still much work to be done in creating a more inclusive and equitable future.

Women leading the way

#Women2025 highlighted how digitalization, sustainability, and financial empowerment are shaping the future of women-led enterprises.

Aside from Denice Sy and Mayor Joy Belmonte, the event also featured Melanie Magboo, CEO of Binibini Marikit; Janine Codizal, marketing manager of ECORA PH; Mona Celine Yap, department head of the Quezon City Small Business and Cooperatives Development Promotions Office; Corrs Valenton, owner of Corrsy’s Kitchen; Everly Aguilar, owner of Simo’t Sarap Chicken Wings; Kate Jennifer Enrile, wealth solutions officer at GCash; and Rachel Jennel Halfon, licensing officer I at the Quezon City Small Business and Cooperatives Development Promotions Office.

These women, each making strides in their respective industries, showcased the power of innovation, resilience, and community-driven leadership in shaping a more inclusive and empowered future for women entrepreneurs. Their insights reinforced the importance of innovation, adaptability, and self-confidence in navigating the evolving business landscape.

Intertwining Nutmeg Cultivation and Sustainability by Papuan Women

Thursday, March 20, 2025

Mama Siti Fakfak

The perfume industry has recently seen a surge in innovation, with top brands competing to create unique, exotic fragrances. This trend has pushed experts to explore rare natural ingredients worldwide, including nutmeg, traditionally used in Southeast Asian cuisine and now recognized for its aromatic potential in perfumery.

Nutmeg can also be seen in Filipino dishes like suman, bibingka, and biko, valued not just for its warm, aromatic flavor but also for its digestive and anti-inflammatory benefits. Despite growing demand, nutmeg cultivation faces sustainability challenges.

In Indonesia's Papua region, nutmeg harvesting is a family effort, but women dominate post-harvest processing—gathering fallen fruits, separating flesh from seeds, and drying them.

As we celebrate International Women's Month, it's important to recognize the women behind these raw materials. In many parts of the world, women play a crucial yet often overlooked role in agriculture and natural ingredient production. Their labor and expertise drive industries far beyond their local economies, contributing to global markets.

Mama Siti, a 52-year-old nutmeg farmer and cooperative board member leads women in processing high-quality nutmeg. For the Indigenous Peoples of West Papua, the nutmeg tree symbolizes life and is deeply respected, with strict taboos against felling it. Traditional harvest practices include a "wewowo" gathering two months prior, where a kebaya (a traditional outfit) is symbolically placed on trees to prevent premature harvesting. The trees are “undressed” when harvesting begins, followed by a natural land recovery period.

Mama Siti explains, "The nutmeg trees in the village forest of Dusun Pala, Pangwadar Village, Kokas District, Fakfak Regency, West Papua are already abundant, so the men's task is usually only to climb the trees to pick the ripe fruit. As for the processing, so far, there are 118 women who clean the nutmeg fruits, separate the flesh from the seeds, and then dry them under the sun." However, fluctuating nutmeg prices and a biannual harvest cycle make farming financially unstable. Many farmers take on seasonal jobs to survive.

"The price of nutmeg often fluctuates and is unpredictable depending on the season. When the price drops, the income from nutmeg is only enough to meet daily needs. After the harvest season ends, many of us are forced to switch occupations to support our families," adds Mama Siti. "The Tomandin nutmeg tree is not just a tree to us. It is a legacy from our ancestors, passed down through generations to give us life. I can only say that Tomandin nutmeg is a miracle for us."

Kaleka and Wewowo Lestari Initiative

In the midst of these challenges, an Indonesian nonprofit Kaleka launched Wewowo Lestari to enhance nutmeg value while preserving the environment. Through training, women farmers learn improved processing techniques.

"We empower farmers with better SOPs, including solar drying, which has boosted sales revenue by 13-40%," says Kaleka's Executive Board Assistant, Venticia Hukom. Beyond quality improvements, Kaleka collaborates with the French Association Francaise des Dieteticiens Nutritionnistes (AFDN) to develop nutmeg-based products. "Papuan nutmeg was overlooked due to its low oil yield, but our research increased its extraction rate from 1% to 3.5%, enabling its use in perfumes and cosmetics," Hukom explains.

This has opened doors to partnerships with global brands like Hermès and Chanel. Kaleka continues to explore markets for expanded nutmeg-based products, boosting its international competitiveness.

Improving the Local Economy and Preserving the Environment

The Wewowo Lestari initiative has not only increased farmers' incomes but also positively impacted the environment. Through Koperasi Mery Tora Qpohi, a business entity established by and for nutmeg farmers, members earn 11-40% more than selling to middlemen. Fakfak Regency in West Papua, home to 908,850 hectares of forest and where 26,927 indigenous people rely on 56 nutmeg trees per hectare of forest for their livelihoods. Kaleka has supported nutmeg sustainability for nearly eight years. For these communities, nutmeg is more than a commodity—it is a way of life.

Mama Siti said, “By applying local wisdom in the sustainable processing of nutmeg, we can maintain a stable livelihood without having to sacrifice the environment and provide an incentive for us to always preserve the forest, so that we are not dependent on extractive industries that damage the forest.” Maximizing nutmeg’s potential has led to new products like syrups, sweets, and essential oils, increasing its economic value.

"Assisted by Kaleka, we continue to strive to utilize all parts of nutmeg to minimize waste that typically accumulates when it is used as a cooking ingredient. Currently, we have sold approximately 500 bottles of fruit juice made from nutmeg pulp that would otherwise have been left under the nutmeg trees to rot,” Mama Siti explains. The success of Wewowo Lestari brings hope for nutmeg farmers. By fostering collective learning and evidence-based advocacy, the initiative aims to drive policy changes for environmental management and sustainable economic development.

"In five years, we envision a functional social enterprise led by Indigenous communities, where they can sell their nutmeg at a high value, similar to other sustainable commodities produced in West Papua such as seaweed, crabs, and patchouli, which can improve the livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples. In ten years, Kaleka aims to have indigenous forests recognized at the national level, with forest protection policies that could inspire other regions in Indonesia. In fifteen years, we will see a cluster industry of perfumes, essential oils, and fisheries in Fakfak, West Papua," said Venticia Hukom.

SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, has joined hands with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Philippines to support the transformative All Lights Village project. This partnership was solidified with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on February 14, 2025, at the SM Prime Headquarters, marking another significant step forward in promoting sustainable development and empowering underprivileged communities in off-grid areas.

The All Lights Village project, spearheaded by GPF Philippines, is an innovative initiative designed to improve the quality of life for families living in rural areas without access to electricity. By providing solar lighting, educational resources, and livelihood opportunities, the program is creating brighter futures for these communities while championing clean energy solutions and sustainable growth.

A Shared Commitment to Uplifting Communities

Through this partnership, SM Cares will provide spaces in SM Aura, SM Megamall, and SM Mall of Asia for fundraising booths dedicated to the All Lights Village project. Funds raised through these booths will directly support the initiative, enabling more families to benefit from solar lighting, better education, and sustainable livelihoods.

During the MOA signing, Joaquin San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing of SM Supermalls, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. “SM Cares is proud to support the All Lights Village project and its mission of empowering communities through sustainable development. By providing these families with clean energy and opportunities, we are not just lighting homes but also paving the way for brighter, more hopeful futures.”

Leonard Faustino, Executive Director of GPF Philippines, shared similar sentiments. “This partnership with SM Cares reflects a shared vision of creating lasting change in communities that need it the most. Together, we are proving that even the smallest actions, like providing light, can spark transformative impact.”

Impacting Lives Through Clean Energy and Sustainability

The All Lights Village initiative has already made a significant difference in rural areas by reducing reliance on harmful kerosene lamps and offering children a safe and well-lit environment for studying. This partnership will enable even more families to access these benefits, creating ripple effects of progress across communities.

The fundraising booths at SM malls will serve as a platform for shoppers to participate in this cause, ensuring that the public becomes an integral part of this life-changing initiative. More details about the booth locations and schedules will be announced soon, inviting everyone to contribute to a brighter tomorrow.

Looking Forward: Building a Better Future Together

This partnership underscores SM Cares’ continued commitment to empowering communities and supporting impactful initiatives that improve lives. The All Lights Village project is not just about providing light—it’s about illuminating opportunities and fostering a sense of hope and unity among the most underserved populations.

World Health Organization and Encephalitis International Launch Technical Brief on Encephalitis Amid Increasing Global Threat

Sunday, February 23, 2025

Encephalitis International, a nonprofit organization, funded a technical brief recently released by the World Health Organization (WHO) in recognition of World Encephalitis Day on February 22. The brief identifies encephalitis, a life-threatening brain inflammation, as a growing global threat and urgent public health issue due to its high mortality, disability burden, and economic impact.

The technical brief outlines key actions to improve prevention, data collection, diagnostics, treatment, aftercare, awareness, and research innovation. It calls on health professionals, policymakers, and global stakeholders to take action and implement recommendations to save lives and reduce disability from encephalitis.

“Encephalitis is an increasing global threat. Without urgent attention and investment, we will see more needless deaths and disability from the condition,” said Dr. Ava Easton, Chief Executive of Encephalitis International. “The launch of this Technical Brief is a critical step toward addressing the gaps in awareness, diagnosis, and treatment. It provides a roadmap for policymakers and healthcare professionals to strengthen surveillance, improve patient care, and drive much-needed research. Encephalitis can no longer be ignored—we must act now to prevent avoidable suffering and loss.”

“The WHO Encephalitis Technical Brief aims to focus attention on the increasing global threat of encephalitis, prevention strategies, and existing gaps in diagnosis, treatment, and care, which will help enable more people affected to receive the treatment and support they need to live fulfilling and healthy lives,” said Dr. Tarun Dua, Head of the Brain Health Unit at WHO. “By strengthening surveillance, expanding access to timely and accurate diagnosis, and ensuring that encephalitis is prioritized within national healthcare frameworks, we can improve outcomes for millions of individuals worldwide. Urgent collaboration across governments, healthcare systems, and researchers is essential to addressing this growing health challenge.”

Multiple Factors Driving Global Threat

Low awareness of encephalitis remains a major challenge, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment, which increases mortality and complications. The brief, however, highlights that encephalitis is expected to spread further due to several key factors:

Rising population density increases the spread of encephalitis, especially in resource-limited settings where overcrowding and healthcare shortages make prevention and treatment more difficult.

Emerging and re-emerging infections introduce new encephalitis-causing pathogens or revive old ones, challenging surveillance and response efforts while increasing the risk of outbreaks.

Vaccine hesitancy reduces immunization coverage, weakening protection against preventable causes of encephalitis and contributing to disease resurgence.

Climate change shifts environmental conditions, expanding the habitat of disease-carrying vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks, increasing the transmission of vector-borne encephalitis.

Urbanization accelerates human encroachment into natural habitats, increasing exposure to animal-borne pathogens while also straining sanitation and healthcare systems, further driving encephalitis cases.

Hidden Burden in Low-to-Middle-Income Countries Like the Philippines

The true global burden of encephalitis remains unknown, particularly in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs) like the Philippines, where health services and resources are often limited. Many patients require intensive care with trained neurological staff, but specialized neurology units are scarce. Even where facilities exist, patients may need to travel long distances for treatment. Limited access to essential medications, inadequate supply chains, and regulatory challenges further hinder treatment, leaving many without proper care.

Beyond medical challenges, the economic and social burden of encephalitis is severe. The high cost of treatment, coupled with lost income and long-term brain and nerve damage, places a heavy strain on families. Disabilities resulting from encephalitis, including cognitive and motor impairments, further impact quality of life and productivity. Addressing these issues requires stronger encephalitis research, focusing on disease burden, health economics, long-term outcomes, and improved health information systems to support better prevention, diagnosis, and care.

Reducing the burden of encephalitis requires a multifaceted approach, starting with vaccination strategies, robust surveillance systems, and stronger health systems. Advancing medical and public health research is essential to drive new solutions, while public awareness and education can help prevent cases, improve early detection, and foster greater understanding of the condition.

“Our recent research has shown that many of the interventions needed to improve diagnosis and treatment of encephalitis are not particularly expensive. A lot of it is about increasing surveillance and recognition of the condition, providing simple equipment for early diagnosis, and making sure the right treatments, many of which are very affordable, are available,” said Professor Tom Solomon CBE, President of Encephalitis International and advisor to the WHO.

The condition must also be prioritized in global and national health agendas, with increased resources for targeted interventions and collaboration among public and private stakeholders. These combined efforts can reduce the disease burden, improve outcomes for those affected, and strengthen health systems to better respond to this growing health threat.

To support the recommended actions from the technical brief, Encephalitis International has launched a pilot appeal “Count Down to Change”. The appeal aims to raise £50,000 (approximately ₱3,667,260) to kickstart a fund dedicated to implementing these actions.

The Technical Brief by WHO and Encephalitis International can be accessed and downloaded through this link.

VFS Global alerts Filipinos and residents of The Philippines against visa frauds, advises to apply early to avoid delays

With the surge in outbound travel demand from The Philippines, visa applications submitted for various countries are at volumes higher than ever before. With this increased demand for visa application appointments, scammers pose as employees or associates of the organisation; or agents and intermediaries who sell appointments, issue fake appointment letters, or claim to influence positive visa decision, etc. to embezzle innocent visa applicants.

Given this context, VFS Global, the world’s leading outsourcing and technology service specialist, shared anti-fraud and apply-in-advance advisories for visa applicants at an event held in Manila, Philippines, on 12 February 2025.

Bernard Vijaykumar

Commenting on the matter, Bernard Vijaykumar, Head – North Asia & Philippines, VFS Global, said, “We strongly encourage all travellers to apply for their visas well in advance of their intended travel dates. Waiting until the last moment not only increases the risk of delays but also exposes applicants to fraudulent entities seeking to exploit their urgency. Additionally, it is also important for applicants to know that VFS Global does not work in association with any third-party entities for appointment bookings and has no role or influence on decision making. They should be beware of scammers and fraudulent entities who claim to be associated with VFS Global in any capacity or pose as a VFS Global representative to dupe unsuspecting visa applicants and do proper due diligence before paying money.”

Here’s a quick guide for visa applicants to mitigate frauds:

1. Apply early

It is recommended to apply for visas as early as booking flights and accommodation. Most countries accept visa applications up to 90 days (3 months) before your date of travel. According to the revised Schengen Visa Code, effective 09 February 2020, you can apply for a Schengen visa up to 6 months before your date of travel.

2. Visa appointments are free

We do not charge any payment for scheduling visa appointments for countries we serve. Appointments are free and can be booked only on www.vfsglobal.com. There could be a nominal service fee to prepay for select countries.

3. VFS Global has no role or influence on the decision of your visa application

The decision on visa applications, the visa tenure, and timelines to process them lie solely in the hands of the concerned Embassies or Consulates. VFS Global simply handles the administrative and non-judgmental aspects of the visa application process. VFS Global or any third-party entity has no role or influence on the decision of your visa application.

4. VFS Global does not work in association with any third-party entities

Applicants should beware of scammers and fraudulent entities who claim to be associated with us in any capacity or pose as VFS Global to guarantee appointments or positive visa decision to dupe them.

5. VFS Global is neither involved in job placement nor immigration-related services.

Applicants are advised to be cautious of scammers offering spurious job or immigration opportunities for money.

In the rush to travel, applicants also tend to make avoidable mistakes, which lead to rejection of their visas. Here are the most common mistakes applicants make and ways to avoid them:

1. Information mismatch: Applicants should make sure that the details on their application forms, such as name, passport number, and date of birth, exactly match their official documents. In some cases, people tend to write information that is inconsistent with their documents or identity proofs.

2. Incorrect photo format: Applicants must submit photos that meet the required format. Please visit our website for photo guidelines specific to the country you are ordering from.

3. Incomplete documentation: Applicants should refer to the destination-specific checklist available on the VFS Global information pages to submit all required documents. Even a single missing document may render your application incomplete and may cause delay/rejection.

4. Unauthenticated bank statements: For certain destinations, applicants should make sure their bank statements are properly updated and authenticated as required, although this may vary from mission to mission. While it is common to present bank statements, and most travellers are aware of this, not having these bank statements authenticated is a common mistake.

VFS Global caters to 28 sovereign governments in the Philippines namely Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece (represents Portugal), Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway (represents Iceland), Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UAE (Dubai visa and Attestation Services), Ukraine, and United Kingdom.
