Opening a bank account online often requires users to upload government-issued IDs, complete multiple verification steps, and wait for approval. For many Filipinos, these requirements can become obstacles, particularly for those who lack easy access to physical identification documents or stable internet connections.
GoTyme Bank is seeking to remove one of those barriers by integrating directly with the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys). Through a partnership with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the digital bank now allows eligible customers to verify their identity using PhilSys records, reducing the number of verification steps and enabling account opening in as little as five minutes.
The partnership makes GoTyme Bank one of the first banks in the Philippines to connect directly with the National ID Authentication Services (NIDAS) at the system level.
Instead of requiring applicants to photograph or upload a physical ID during registration, the bank can authenticate identities against official government records in real time through PhilSys.
Customers can complete verification using one of three methods:
- The QR code found on a physical, digital, or printed PhilSys ID
- Their PhilSys Card Number (PCN)
- Their name and date of birth
Providing multiple verification options reduces friction during the digital onboarding process and makes opening an account more convenient for users with different types of PhilSys credentials.
How does this support financial inclusion?
Financial inclusion remains a major challenge in the Philippines.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), about half of Filipino adults remain unbanked or underbanked. One of the most commonly cited reasons is the lack of acceptable identification required by financial institutions.
Although more than 94 million Filipinos have already registered with PhilSys, many prospective customers still abandon online banking applications because document upload and verification can be confusing or unsuccessful.
By eliminating the document capture requirement for eligible users, GoTyme Bank aims to reduce this friction and encourage more Filipinos to access formal financial services.
What is NIDAS?
The National ID Authentication Services (NIDAS) is the authentication platform that allows authorized organizations to verify an individual's identity against PhilSys records with the user's consent.
Rather than relying solely on physical identification cards, NIDAS enables digital verification using official government data. This approach supports electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) processes, helping financial institutions verify customers more efficiently while maintaining identity verification standards.
For banks, this can reduce onboarding time while minimizing errors associated with manual document submission.
A broader step toward digital public infrastructure
Beyond improving customer convenience, the integration highlights how government digital identity systems are increasingly being used as part of the country's digital public infrastructure.
Digital public infrastructure refers to foundational digital systems such as digital identity, payment networks, and data-sharing platforms that enable both government agencies and private organizations to deliver services more efficiently.
As more institutions integrate with PhilSys, digital identity could become a common gateway for accessing banking, insurance, government benefits, and other essential services.
This shift also reflects the broader push toward interoperable digital ecosystems, where trusted identity verification helps reduce administrative costs while improving service delivery.
Business implications for the Philippine banking sector
GoTyme Bank's latest initiative signals a continuing shift in how financial institutions approach customer onboarding.
Digital banks have traditionally competed through mobile-first experiences, lower fees, and faster transactions. The next area of differentiation may be how seamlessly they integrate with national digital infrastructure.
For banks, reducing onboarding friction can improve customer acquisition while helping institutions reach underserved communities that have historically remained outside the formal financial system.
For regulators and policymakers, partnerships between financial institutions and PhilSys demonstrate how public infrastructure investments can support wider financial inclusion goals through collaboration with the private sector.
Digital identity is becoming an increasingly important part of the customer experience across financial services.
For consumers, simpler verification means less paperwork, shorter waiting times, and faster access to savings accounts and digital financial tools.
For businesses, streamlined identity verification can improve operational efficiency while helping institutions comply with customer verification requirements.
As digital banking adoption continues to grow in the Philippines, integrations like this illustrate how technology and government infrastructure can work together to make financial services more accessible.
GoTyme Bank's direct integration with PhilSys represents more than a faster account-opening process. It demonstrates how digital identity infrastructure can reduce long-standing barriers to banking by replacing manual document verification with secure, real-time authentication.
As more organizations adopt similar approaches, digital identity is expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding access to financial services and accelerating the country's broader digital transformation.
