Tuesday, November 7, 2023

The recently concluded Manila FAME event witnessed an extraordinary debut from the Province of Pangasinan, as it unveiled the talents of 10 exceptional micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to the world. These artisans brought their export-quality products to the World Trade Center, representing not only their province but also the creative spirit of the Philippines. This article delves into the remarkable talents and contributions of these MSMEs and their impact on Pangasinan's journey towards inclusive growth.

Pangasinan's Premier Artisans

The 10 distinguished MSMEs that took center stage at Manila FAME are the driving force behind the province's burgeoning reputation in the world of craftsmanship. These artisans include Herwin Buccat, Blades, Erastus, ILO, WELAB, Alma, Rach, Cawayan, Joy, and B6.

Their diverse creations span opulent fashion pieces, home furnishings with a blend of tropical and contemporary elegance, and chef-approved kitchen knives crafted by acclaimed swordsmiths. Each of these products carries a unique touch that pays homage to Pangasinan's agricultural richness and deep-rooted heritage.

Governor Ramon V. Guico III's Support

Pangasinan Governor Ramon V. Guico III played a pivotal role in supporting the province's presence at the prestigious Manila FAME event. He, along with local leaders, especially from Binalonan and Bolinao, recognized the importance of showcasing Pangasinan's creative industries on a global stage. Ballet Manila celebrates grace, romance and exceptional dancing with Don Quixote

Ballet Manila Don Quixote

Filipinos have always been imaginative and are known for their positive outlook in life. Dreams inflame their hearts, fill them with hope and resiliency to face obstacles, and fuel their passion for achieving goals. This is the same spirit that Ballet Manila brings as it opens its 25th performance season on its 27th year with the vibrant and highly entertaining Don Quixote set to premiere at Aliw Theater in Pasay City on May 27, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. and May 28, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.

“I think dancing Don Quixote as our first full length classical ballet for the year is very appropriate because now is the time to pull out all the stops. Make the dancers and audience just enjoy themselves back onstage and in the theater,” shared Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s artistic director and chief executive officer.

Joining the performance is San Francisco Ballet principal dancer, Esteban Hernandez who will fly in to Manila to play the male lead role Basilio. While Hernandez has performed in Don Quixote previously as a Gitano leader, this time, he portrays a major character who he explained is one that many people can surely relate to. “Basilio is a well-liked, fun, almost carefree guy who just wants to make a living and enjoy his time with the people he loves; in this case, Kitri. I think in some way or another people can relate to this sentiment,” he says.

For this staging of Don Quixote, Macuja Elizalde steps in to help Pia Dames prepare for the female lead character Kitri. Macuja Elizalde is ensuring that Dames is in tip top shape for the flashy technical dancing form of Don Quixote: “Stamina, strength and a solid technique are must-haves for dancing Don Quixote. Classes and rehearsals are essential so we just keep practicing every day,” she says.

For her part, Dames is doing ballet sports science workouts to avoid injuries. She explained, “When I did my first full length Don Quixote, I wasn’t fully prepared so I had to fight until the end with an injured ankle and stress fracture. My main goal now is for my body to be healthy and pain-free throughout the whole show.” Although there is pressure to do well, Dames is enjoying the whole journey.

“I know how good Esteban is so I am more than excited to share the stage with him. It’s not every day that you get to partner with someone from San Francisco Ballet, so to have been given the opportunity to dance with him is definitely a highlight of my dancing career,” says Dames.

Sharing her sentiments, Hernandez who always enjoys dancing with different partners, notes, “It feels really special to come to the Philippines and dance with a Filipina principal dancer. I’m really looking forward to getting know Pia and to develop our partnership.”

So as the Filipino audience witness these two principal dancers bring the characters to life, he hopes that they will leave the theater feeling inspired, excited, and even moved. “As an artist I put part of who I am into my work so I hope that it’ll also be a great way for us to get to know each other,” Hernandez said.

As for Lisa Macuja Elizalde, who considers Kitri a signature role, she couldn’t be more excited for the return of Don Quixote by Ballet Manila. “I am looking forward to sitting back and enjoying a high quality performance after all the months of work. I am looking forward to watching my company and school revisit a classical ballet that has been such an important and major part of my ballerina life, and I am looking forward to developing more young people to watch and appreciate ballet.”

Don Quixote will be staged at Aliw Theater, Pasay City. For tickets, visit www.ticketworld.com.ph or call 8891 9999. To know more about Ballet Manila and its shows, visit www.balletmanila.com.ph

Filipino singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis marks a monumental milestone in music with the official release of her Tower Sessions Live album under Sony Music Entertainment and a reunion concert featuring her iconic bands Hungry Young Poets and Barbie’s Cradle.

Both celebrations honor her 25th anniversary in the local music scene as a woman who successfully navigated the realm of Pinoy rock with emotionally resonant songwriting and artistic independence.

Presenting a new arrangement of her old and new songs, Barbie Almalbis’ Greatest Hits live album was produced by Eric and Carlo Perlas of Tower of Doom, recorded by Kyle Cayton, and mixed/mastered by Simon Durias. It will also feature career-defining hits such as “Firewoman,” “Torpe,” “Tabing Ilog,” “The Dance,” “Goodnight,” and “Just A Smile,” along with fairly new tracks: “Days Are Long,” “Silaw,” “Tigre,” and “Kumpas,” the album’s carrier single.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to record our songs live, because we’re always rearranging songs as a band, and I think there’s something special that gets captured when the we play live together,” Almalbis shares. “My producers and collaborators did such a great job of making you feel like you’re at the gig. You can feel the power of the kick drum and the bass, and then have guitars blasting in your ear — in a pleasant way, of course.”

Barbie Almalbis 25th Anniversary Concert

Aside from the release of Tower Sessions Live on digital platforms, Barbie Almalbis is set to headline her 25th Anniversary concert at 123 Block, Mandala Park on March 11 (Saturday), from 2pm onwards. Celebrating the impact of her music as a guide to many people’s journey in life, the show will reunite her with former bandmates in Hungry Young Poets and Barbie’s Cradle.

Aptly titled Firewoman:25 Years of Barbie Almalbis, the mini-music fest will also feature sets by some of the country’s finest acts, including Sandwich, Gab Alipe of Urbandub, Clara Benin, I Belong To The Zoo, Kai del Rio, and Bird.

Reflecting on her career as an artist, Almalbis expressed gratitude to her fans who have been supportive of her endeavors through the years. “I didn’t have so many plans growing up, but always just dreamt of playing music. I’m so grateful that I get to do this and share the experience with others too. I’m always touched by the support of my fans and friends, and really humbled and encouraged by their words and stories about how these songs have also become part of their journey.”

Barbie Almalbis’ Tower Sessions Live is now available on all digital platforms worldwide under Sony Music Entertainment.

Tickets to her upcoming concert, Firewoman:25 Years of Barbie Almalbis are available for purchase via TicketMelon.
