The British Council, through the IELTS Ready Premium, equips aspiring international students with the right tools and support to take the IELTS with confidence and ease.

The IELTS Ready Premium is the British Council’s latest support tool, offering personalised and comprehensive resources to help Filipino students who aim to study abroad effectively prepare for their exams.

For Filipino students dreaming of studying abroad, taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the global benchmark for English proficiency, opens doors to some of the most prestigious universities worldwide. The British Council, through its IELTS Ready Premium, helps test-takers by providing must-have tools, resources, including easy yet helpful IELTS test tips to confidently prepare for the exam and move closer to reaching their academic goals.

The IELTS Ready Premium is British Council’s free support tool where test-takers gain access to expert IELTS test tips, personalised study plans, and mock tests to tackle common challenges like time management, test anxiety, and complex question types. Covering all key skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—the tool equips students to build the confidence and skills they need to ace the IELTS exam.

Backed by research and insights of actual test-takers, the British Council shares 5 proven IELTS test tips for students to approach the exam with confidence and ease:

IELTS Test Tip #1:

Know the IELTS test format.

Knowing what to expect is half the battle won. The IELTS Ready Premium includes well-organised, easy-to-follow exercises for each section—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—that mirror the actual exam, ensuring students are fully prepared for what is to come on exam day.

“The free materials from the British Council provided me the familiarisation to navigate the test, and gave me the confidence to get the band score I needed to study abroad," shares Casey Cruz, 2nd Prize Winner of IELTS Prize 2023 Philippines and now pursuing a Master of Arts in Human Rights at Mahidol University, Thailand.

IELTS Test Tip #2:

Practise with timed mock tests.

The pressure of time can trip up even the most prepared students. Timed mock exams from IELTS Ready Premium simulate the actual test environment, allowing students to practise under pressure, and build familiarity with pacing and timing across sections.

“Taking the practice tests will take away your anxiety and worry because you will get a feel of the flow and the timing of the exam, allowing you to manage your time and plan how you can answer with the time constraint,” advises Rafi Sartin, 3rd Place Winner of the IELTS Prize 2023 Philippines, and currently completing her masters degree in Marketing at Western Sydney University, Australia.

IELTS Test Tip #3:

Follow a personalised study plan.

Every student learns differently, and a customised study plan makes all the difference. With its adaptive learning features, IELTS Ready Premium helps students study at their own pace, and focus on areas that need improvement based on individual learning styles and needs.

“The tailored study plan helped me concentrate on improving specific skills, especially with the personalised videos and targeted exercises,” shares Dorothy Pugoy, now a certified medical laboratory scientist in the United States of America.

IELTS Test Tip #4:

Focus on strengths, improve weaknesses.

Knowing what works and what doesn’t is key to effective exam preparation. The IELTS Ready Premium includes practice tests for listening, reading, writing, and speaking, which provides possible bandscores for each section, helping students pinpoint their strengths and areas for improvement.

“Writing and reading have always been my forte but it turns out that it is the field that I needed help the most. After spending hours reading handouts during my breaks, I worked on those weak spots, while strengthening the areas I had already mastered,” recalls Tracy Salazar, who reached her target band score to study abroad for a post-baccalaureate degree.

IELTS Test Tip#5:

Learn from mistakes.

Mistakes are a natural part of learning. With model answers from test takers at various band levels and detailed feedback explaining what is right or wrong, IELTS Ready Premium helps students identify and correct errors to refine their answers.

“The practice tests gave me an idea on how I was doing so far in terms of reaching my target score to work or study abroad. I appreciate having model answers in the subtests based on the band scores available, since it gave me more ideas on how to compose and improve my answers,” shares Julienne Roman, who scored above her desired band level for future plans to work in the US healthcare industry.

Allianz PNB Life Ride Safe 2.0 Supports Sustainable Impact for Communities

Joseph Salonoy

Active transport, particularly bike commuting, has become a popular option for avoiding traffic in the Philippines. A 2023 survey from the Social Weather Station found that more than a third of Filipinos own a bicycle. As departments of the national government and local government units work towards expanding bike lanes and building more bike-friendly infrastructure, Allianz PNB Life (AZPNBL) supports this growing movement towards a healthier, more environmentally friendly lifestyle with its Ride Safe Campaign.

AZPNBL launched its Ride Safe advocacy in 2021, through awareness campaigns on bike safety and the benefits of active transport, working closely with local government units and partnered with key cities such as San Juan, Taguig, and Manila. Recently, the leading insurance company expanded the initiative with the Ride Safe 2.0 program which seeks to support individuals and their families through livelihoods in bike repair.

Sustainable livelihood

Ride Safe 2.0 is an innovative program designed to offer specialized livelihood support to selected beneficiaries of the Family Strengthening Program (FSP) of SOS Children’s Village Pilipinas, who are interested in pursuing entrepreneurship. The project aims to address daily needs while providing a pathway to establish a sustainable income source through bike-related enterprises.

Its core components include technical entrepreneurship skills development through training programs on business management, financial planning, and bike maintenance and repair at the Hermann Gmeiner National Training Center. The participants were also able to gain knowledge through apprenticeship opportunities with experienced bike mechanics and entrepreneurs. To support their entrepreneurship journey, Ride Safe 2.0 also granted successful participants seed capital for bike mechanic hubs to cover essential start- up costs.

“Our aim with Ride Safe 2.0 is to establish a solid foundation on economic independence and sustainability through bike-related ventures,” says Ramon Lee Cualoping III, SOS Children’s Villages Pilipinas National Director & CEO.

Inclusive growth

Ride Safe 2.0 was launched in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Pilipinas, with family participants in Tacloban, Iloilo, and Cebu villages. The program is designed to empower the participants, particularly women, with the necessary skills in establishing their own bike shops.

Three beneficiaries from SOS Children’s Village in Tacloban became bike repair entrepreneurs after undergoing comprehensive training. To support their learning journey, they received allowances for food and transportation. They opened their Bike Repair Shop in Barangay 97-Cabalawan, Tacloban City.

From Cebu, aspiring entrepreneur Joseph Salonoy has received Ride Safe 2.0 technical and entrepreneurship skills training, plus P120,000 in two tranches as his capital for his bike repair business. He was able to open his own bike repair shop in Purok Avocado, Bgy. Tawason, Mandaue City.

The Allianz-Ride Safe 2.0 grant also empowered Jeram Tubongbanua, Regen Rubin, Renato Gadot Jr., Ricky Natalio, and Fermin Lintuco Jr. to establish thriving bike shop businesses in Iloilo. Armed with initial seed capital, essential tools, and comprehensive training, these entrepreneurs have not only secured additional income streams to support their families but became vital contributors to their communities. By offering essential bike repair services and affordable parts, they have filled a critical gap in the market while promoting sustainable transportation.

“Their success stories underscored the power of collaboration, skills development, and community engagement in driving progress. The Allianz-Ride Safe 2.0 grant has empowered these individuals, ignited a ripple effect of positive change, inspired others to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, and contributed to the betterment of their communities. This is aligned with Allianz’s global strategy and commitment to investing in communities to foster resilience and confidence for a better tomorrow,” says Joe Gross, Allianz PNB Life Chief Executive Officer.

Mastercard Expands Payment Options on BGC Buses

The collaboration between Mastercard and beep™ aims to broaden contactless acceptance in the Philippines, bringing greater convenience to commuters

Commuters can now conveniently pay for bus rides using their Mastercard prepaid, debit, or credit cards on Bonifacio Transport Corporation (BGC) buses. Cardholders can simply tap their Mastercard card directly on BGC bus validators, eliminating the need to buy separate bus tickets. This pilot program introduces contactless payments, expanding the existing payment options available via beep™ cards and beep™ QR codes.

The launch in Taguig is the first phase of a pilot program under the strategic partnership between Mastercard and AF Payments Inc. (AFPI), the company behind beep™. Announced in February this year, future phases of the program will introduce contactless payments across other transit systems, including EDSA buses and Metro Rail Transit Line 3.

This initiative also supports the Philippine government’s ambition to accelerate digital payments adoption in the country across various sectors such as transport. It reaffirms Mastercard’s commitment to advancing smart and inclusive mobility in the Philippines. By eliminating the need to carry cash or multiple transit tickets, it will simplify and enhance the commuting experience for Filipinos.

With Metro Manila home to around 14 million residents, many of whom rely heavily on public transport, the introduction of contactless payments in the city’s public transport system will help drive the adoption of digital payments among Filipinos for everyday transactions. This not only enhances convenience, but also delivers a more seamless and efficient travel experience for passengers.

Commuters paying with their Mastercard cards will also benefit from cybersecurity features that protect against card skimming and payment fraud. Mastercard’s extensive range of cybersecurity & intelligence systems draw on identity verification data, machine learning, behavioural analytics and artificial intelligence to help organizations of all sizes enhance security standards. Over the last 5 years, Mastercard has invested $7 billion into cybersecurity and AI capabilities globally.

JJ Moreno

JJ Moreno, President and Chief Executive Officer, AF Payments Inc. (beep™), said: “We are excited to partner with Mastercard to launch the first phase of this important partnership. As an emerging and dynamic hub for global companies and innovative startups, Bonifacio Global City is the ideal location to kick off this rollout, which will not only improve transit options for local commuters, but also raise the efficiency and accessibility of public transport operations in line with global standards.”

Simon Calasanz, Country Manager, Philippines, Mastercard, said: “This pilot program exemplifies Mastercard’s commitment to delivering innovative transit solutions for Metro Manila, while also furthering the adoption of digital payments in the Philippines. Mastercard looks forward to working with beep™ to bring greater convenience to local residents by introducing new payment options, which in turn will help reduce queues and contribute to an overall more rewarding transit experience.”

Mastercard has enabled open loop transit systems in several major cities around the world such as London, Sydney, and Singapore, using its proven expertise to enhance the commuter experience and improve public transportation infrastructure and operations. It is the first international payment network to enable ‘Tap & Go’ on public transport in Metro Manila.

USANA Health Symposium

USANA Philippines, in its unwavering commitment to promote health and wellness, recently conducted its second health symposium held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, bringing together a distinguished lineup of experts in health, wellness, and nutrition who shared their insights and practical knowledge to enhance their audience’s well-being.

USANA Difference

Dr. Robert Sinnott

Dr. Robert Sinnott, the Chief Scientific Officer of USANA, commenced the event by underscoring the company’s distinct standing within the health and wellness sector. He accentuated USANA’s dedication to scientific inquiry and innovation in developing nutritional products that substantially enhance health. This methodology serves to motivate individuals to pursue healthier lifestyles for themselves and their families.

USANA has received numerous international awards that testify to its ability to uphold quality standards and produce innovative products. These awards reflect the company's excellence and leadership in the wellness industry. According to Dr. Sinnott, such recognition promotes USANA's influence as well as its commitment to customer satisfaction.

This is evident in its many international awards, which demonstrate USANA's focus on quality. The awards come in different categories—top products and business practices, which include consumer trust. Each recognition is viewed as a success in positioning USANA as a global leader in the wellness industry, underscoring its excellence.

Dr. Sinnott noted that these accolades celebrate USANA's steadfast commitment to excellence in all areas. The recognition is the result of hard work by the entire team and an unwavering commitment by the company to high standards in product development and customer service. Through perpetual innovation and persistence in improvement, USANA meets consumer requirements and sets new standards for performance in the wellness industry.

In addition to its dedication to product quality, USANA strives to inspire healthier living on a larger scale. The company empowers individuals to take control of their well-being, thereby nurturing a healthier global community. USANA's mission is to effect enduring positive change, motivating individuals to embrace lifestyles that contribute to a brighter and healthier future.

Optimizing Women’s Health

“In a world where women's reproductive health often takes a back seat, it is crucial to advocate for policies and systems that prioritize comprehensive care,” Alpheratz Jose-Morano said.

In as much as women’s roles have evolved through the centuries, women's health needs to also evolve through different life stages—puberty, reproductive years, pregnancy, menopause, and aging. Within each phase, females may encounter. Hence, women are therefore advised to embrace these changes to take charge of their health.

Jose-Morano addressed vital topics such as access to comprehensive healthcare, education and awareness, nutrition and lifestyle choices, mental health support, fertility awareness, communication with healthcare providers, and community support to empower women to take charge of their health with confidence and knowledge.

Furthermore, regular gynecological check-ups are vital for early detection of health issues and overall reproductive health. Early detection and consistent care may help maintain a healthy body and overall outcomes. She said, personally every woman should ensure that physical health is a top priority by eating healthy and balanced diet, spending time for physical activity or regular exercise, and avoiding things that can be harmful such as cigarettes and alcohol.

This approach will not only benefit women but will also strengthen the community, making every resource accessible to all women who need to thrive. She said that delving into this creates a culture of awareness and support for all women.

Synergy in Nutrition

One of the topics discussed was synergy in nutrition. Mary Rose Del Rio, noted that this concept resonates with active men and women who face the demands of a busy lifestyle. She emphasizes the importance of viewing nutrition as a foundation for overall wellness, as the foods we consume can affect our mood, cognitive function, and emotional stability.

Mary Rose highlights how specific wellness packs can support these aspects of health. For instance, the Immunity Pack helps support digestive health and maintain the immune system, which is important for professionals navigating a demanding lifestyle. The Athlete Pack provides a powerful combination of products that support the body during strenuous training, while the Cardio Pack is tailored to maintain cardiovascular health, crucial for overall vitality. Additionally, the Basic Wellness Pack offers essential supplements that promote overall health and vitality, making it an excellent part of a daily routine for anyone focused on maintaining emotional resilience and mental stability.

She stresses the importance of balance in their diet, as well as nutrient synergy, quality nutrition, quality sleep, regular exercise, stress management, and hydration for maintaining heart health, athletic performance, immunity, and digestion, thus improving the quality of life for both men and women.

Foundations of Family Health

Rio Santiago expounded on the nutritional needs of women across different stages, from adolescence through menopause and beyond. She mentioned, Filipinos in general have a habit of not prioritizing their own health. In Filipino language, "isusubo nalang, ibibigay pa sa anak.” But there is good news, in these present times, more and more Filipinos are having this paradigm shift to prioritize self-care so that they can take care of others especially their families.

Santiago aims to empower women to make wise choices for their families and for themselves.

With Dr. Sinnott, Rio Santiago, Alpheratz Jose--Morano, and Ms. Del Rio, participants had an engaging session where they had the opportunity to ask questions. Additionally, the official launch of the 28-day Fat Loss Challenge 2024 was announced, concluding with exciting prizes through a raffle. All insights gained serve as valuable reminders of how informed health choices and the power of collective action are important. Indeed, we can inspire a healthier future, equipping everyone with the knowledge and resources necessary to thrive.

USANA's inaugural health symposium, focused on the importance of supplementation and wellness, first took place last March as a private event. Unlike that event, the recent symposium was open to the public, aiming to promote the significance of innovation and scientific research in overall wellness.

Chevron leads Batangas shoreline cleanup, collecting 12 tons of trash in time for sea turtles’ nesting season

Saturday, November 9, 2024

Chevron Philippines Inc, marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, Chevron Holdings Incorporated (CHI), Chevron’s global shared services organization based in the country, joined forces again with several partner organizations and volunteers to collect 239 sacks of trash, equivalent to 12 tons, along the coastline of San Pascual, Batangas for the annual Chevron Coastal Cleanup.

A total of 206 volunteers showed up along the 5-kilometer shoreline of Chevron Batangas terminal to help make the area a safe nesting ground for vulnerable Olive Ridley sea turtles. Chevron has been hosting the local San Pascual cleanup since 2007 and recorded a stark increase in hatchlings within two years. In fact, the number grew from 23 hatchlings in 2022 to 768 in 2024.

Batangas Terminal Manager Ray Año said that Chevron has remained loyal to this annual tradition as part of its larger mission to promote environmental stewardship, “It’s our social responsibility, and we encourage all our employees to partake in whatever efforts they can to help the environment.”

Arlita Narag, CHI Corporate Affairs Manager, said that the volunteers value the opportunity to help keep the coastline clean. “The cleanup is also a good reminder to be responsible with waste disposal, as this can ensure that less waste ends up in the oceans and on shorelines where they negatively impact marine life,” she added.

Chevron recognizes it cannot do these annual cleanups alone. Hence, it has fostered meaningful partnerships with the local government and other private companies over the years and enlisted their members as cleanup volunteers.

Charlene Constantino of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Lipa said that the long-standing partnership of Chevron with the government for these coastal cleanups has truly benefited the Olive Ridley turtle population. She pointed out that this species’ unique trait is that the grown turtles return to their hatching grounds to lay their eggs. Hence, she invites more volunteers to join the future coastal cleanups to ensure that the species’ population will continue to grow.

Constantino added, “We’re looking forward na hindi lang sa libro makita ng next generations ang mga pawikan but for them to also have a firsthand encounter. [We look forward to the time when the next generations will not only see these turtles through a book but for them to also have a firsthand encounter.]”

The annual coastal cleanup is a testament to CPI’s continued commitment to making a safe habitat for sea creatures. Chevron also organizes regular tree-planting activities and hosts school seminars on practices such as waste segregation as part of its dedication to human safety, livelihood, and the environment.

One of the training recipients expressed hope that they can use their skills to earn a living. “Kahit hindi ako nakapagtapos ng pag-aaral ay nagpapasalamat ako kasi natuto akong gumupit. Sana ay huwag tayong panghinaan at mawalan ng pag-asa, at maging matagumpay tayong lahat.”

La Union disaster preparedness

Leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc (PLDT) and its wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) are expanding their disaster preparedness expertise to the barangay level as part of the company's push to help boost the country's culture of resilience.

In partnership with Barangay Baccuit Sur in Bauang, La Union, PLDT engineers assigned at the company’s La Union Cable Landing Station (LUCLS) shared practical tips for creating effective disaster resilience plans to help the community safeguard their homes and families during emergencies.

Jacques Dean O. Gutierrez Jr., Head of LUCLS Operations, led the activity by sharing insights on disaster planning, focusing on how individuals and families can protect their homes and loved ones during disasters. Gutierrez also presented a disaster preparedness guide, providing essential strategies for communities to plan effectively before emergencies arise. An interactive Q&A portion after the lecture also reinforced key lessons.

"Through this activity, we recognize the importance of actively engaging our local communities in order to foster a culture of resilience," Gutierrez said. "This initiative is also aligned with our commitment to the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environment Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), ensuring we provide a beneficial social development program that involves our employees, the host barangay, and other parts of communities where we have critical facilities," he added.

Artemio Yadao, Baccuit Sur barangay captain, hailed the event as a significant step toward building a more resilient community. "The knowledge shared by La Union Cable Landing Station and the practical tools they provided, like the Go Bags and pocket procedure guides, will empower our residents to take proactive steps in disaster preparedness. It is reassuring to see how eager everyone was to learn and how this event brought us closer as a community,” he said.

"This initiative is anchored on the company's Resilient Citizen Program and will be subsequently rolled out at the Batangas and Daet International Cable System Stations in the coming months to boost the disaster preparedness know-how of employees, their families and the communities surrounding PLDT's critical network facilities," said Leo A. Gonzales, VP and Head of Property Facilities and Asset Resiliency Management.

It also boosts PLDT's "Iwas Kable" campaign in barangays near the ocean, whose main objective is to ensure the protection of both PLDT's submarine cable systems and the fisherfolk, who need to be made aware that these cables are energized.

PLDT and Smart’s Business Continuity and Resilience Office Business Continuity Awareness Program supports the company’s thrust for resiliency and industry-leading operational excellence for enhanced stakeholder confidence.

These initiatives also align with the PLDT Group’s commitment to support the Philippine government's digitalization thrust, and the country's attainment of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) No. 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

DepEd and Chalkboard Launch the ARAL Program: A New Initiative to Boost Literacy and Numeracy in Public Schools

Monday, October 21, 2024

In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) has entered into a formal partnership with Chalkboard, a leading provider of tutoring services, to launch the Academic Remediation, Acceleration, and Livelihood (ARAL) Program. This program seeks to address the pressing challenges in literacy and numeracy faced by Filipino students, particularly in public schools.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on October 14 at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara and Chalkboard CEO Kristine E. Brown. This partnership brings together the strengths of both the public and private sectors to promote improved educational outcomes for K-10 learners.

A Collaborative Effort for Quality Education

The ARAL Program embodies a synergistic collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard, leveraging their combined expertise to ensure accessible, high-quality education for all Filipino learners. This partnership aligns with the government’s mandate to provide accessible, quality education as outlined in Republic Act 8525, otherwise known as the “Adopt-A-School Act of 1998,” which encourages private sector involvement in improving public education.

During the signing ceremony, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving the department’s goals. “DepEd is committed to ensuring that quality education is accessible to all Filipino learners, and this partnership with Chalkboard is a significant step toward that goal. By working together with the private sector, we can improve the academic performance and overall well-being of our students,” he noted.

Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Curriculum Powered by Advanced Technology

At the heart of the ARAL Program lies Chalkboard’s evidence-based curriculum, meticulously designed to ensure effective learning outcomes. This curriculum is grounded in the latest educational research and best practices, ensuring that each component is proven to enhance literacy and numeracy skills. A key feature of this curriculum is its integration of advanced technology to process data and inform the progress of each student.

ARAL Program Structure and Implementation

The ARAL Program employs a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy to address learning deficits exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by Chalkboard, the program offers up to 25 days of targeted tutoring over six weeks, delivered through both in-person and digital platforms. This high-frequency, intensive approach is supported by research demonstrating substantial improvements in literacy and numeracy skills.

The program includes several key components:

Personalized Learning: The tutoring sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring that every learner receives the appropriate support.

Nutritional Support: Recognizing the connection between nutrition and learning, the ARAL Program will provide nutritious snacks or meals during each tutoring session to support students’ well-being.

Community Upskilling and Engagement: The program involves local community members as paid tutors, creating economic opportunities while fostering a supportive educational environment.

Holistic Development: In addition to academic support, the ARAL Program aims to develop students’ socio-emotional skills, preparing them for success both in and outside of the classroom.

Chalkboard has designed the program to be scalable and sustainable, ensuring it can be replicated in different regions and communities across the Philippines. “We believe that education is the key to unlocking the full potential of every child,” said Kristine E. Brown, CEO of Chalkboard. “The ARAL Program is our contribution to improving the educational landscape of the Philippines, particularly in addressing the learning gaps that have been exacerbated by recent challenges such as the pandemic.”

Target Beneficiaries and Community Impact

The primary beneficiaries of the ARAL Program are K-10 students in public schools, particularly those struggling with literacy and numeracy. The program’s implementation will begin with pilot schools, and its success will be measured through Chalkboard’s assessment system, supplemented by DepEd’s assessment tools.

The program not only benefits students but also the wider community. Local community members will be engaged as paid tutors or food vendors, providing them with meaningful employment opportunities while contributing to the educational success of the students.

DepEd will coordinate closely with Chalkboard to select target areas and ensure smooth program implementation. Monitoring and evaluation will be conducted throughout the program’s two-year duration to ensure that it delivers tangible and verifiable results.

A Model for Future Educational Partnerships

The ARAL Program will be funded through partnerships with private sponsors, local government units, and other supporting entities. With the support of these stakeholders, the program aims to create a lasting positive impact on the academic performance and socio-emotional development of Filipino students.

This collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard is seen as a model for future public-private partnerships in education. Both parties are optimistic that the ARAL Program will not only help bridge current learning gaps but also lay the foundation for long-term educational improvements in the country.
