Right to Care Card

To celebrate #PrideMonth, the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) invited communication experts at its 2nd General Membership Meeting (GMM) last June 28 to talk about the importance of championing diversity in workplace communication as well as fostering an inclusive environment.

Dubbed “Speak Out, Stand Out: Championing Diversity in Workplace Communication,” the event held at the DivinaLaw offices in Makati City featured key speakers from MullenLowe TREYNA, the agency that won last year's Grand Anvil Award for the Quezon City Gender and Development Council's Right to Care Card.

The “Right to Care Card,” which was passed into an ordinance by the Quezon City Council in February this year, now works as a Special Power of Attorney (SPA) card that can grant medical-decision making rights to queer couples. It serves as portable proof that having the right to care for your loved ones should not be limited to a specific gender.

Spearheading the discussion was Jam Pascual, a seasoned copywriter at MullenLowe TREYNA, who talked about how the concept for the campaign all began. He shared, “What is care? Our team wanted to get the idea across that the ‘Right to Care’ card relates deeply to ideas and experiences that the average Filipino can understand. We wanted to convey the importance of such concepts as pag-aalaga and malasakit.”

Three other communication experts shared their insights about the initiative, with each one emphasizing how authentic story-telling and using just the right words to communicate the card’s basic concept of “the right to care” among partners – regardless of sexual orientation – is key to the success of the program.

“A factor in the Right to Care initiative’s success is its straightforward concept -- the basic premise of allowing human beings to care for one another. The support and recognition it had been getting may be attributed to simple, authentic, and heartfelt storytelling,” explained Gerald Lim, PR Head of Accounts at MullenLowe TREYNA.

“But of course, communications can only do so much! We also need the support of the community for diversity and inclusivity to flourish,” he added.

Sharing insights from a legal perspective, DivinaLaw Associate Atty. Joshy Aguilar stated, “I think we should be more empathic towards the plight of others. Just because you don't experience the same struggle does not mean that it does not exist or that it’s not real. Even the Supreme Court held that the 1987 Philippine Constitution is capable of accommodating a contemporaneous understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics or SOGIESC.”

Krystel Ybañez, a Senior Art Director at MullenLowe TREYNA, for her part, shared, “The team behind Right to Care is made up of queers and allies. We have brave and supportive leaders in the office who encouraged us to make this happen. That’s why diversity, equality, and inclusion are very important in workplace communication.”

PRSP continues to uphold the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion, recognizing their importance in effective workplace communication and community support. As part of the organization’s #PRforAll theme this year, the alliance is now actively encouraging all communication practitioners to champion the values of diversity, equality and inclusivity in their respective fields.

“MICE Philippines: We Take Your Business to Heart” – A New Era in Global MICE Collaboration

On the opening day of MICECON 2024, the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines proudly unveils "MICE Philippines: We Take Your Business to Heart," a transformative program and message designed to position the Philippines as a premier global destination for meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE). This innovative initiative represents a collaborative effort between the TPB, the private sector, and government bodies, all united by the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence.

Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles

“Today is just the first of many activations to show the world the new MICE Philippines. With this initiative, we are poised to attract more local and international MICE organizers to our shores,” said TPB Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles. “A Global MICE with a stronger sales force, an empowered private sector and the full of support of government all embodied in the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence.”

Turning vision to reality

Transforming the Philippines into a MICE powerhouse requires not just vision but decisive action. The TPB is preparing a dynamic and empowered sales team within its ranks to actively promote the Philippines as a top-tier MICE destination. This dedicated team will ensure that the Philippines remains at the forefront of the global MICE industry, attracting significant international events and conventions.

Robust collaboration with private sector entities is also crucial to this endeavor. The Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers, Inc. (PACEOS) plays a pivotal role in initiating efforts that aim to increase the level of professionalism and development of our local MICE Industry. The publication of the 2nd Edition of the Professional Event Management book by the Philippine MICE Academy in partnership with PACEOS highlights their dedication to enhancing industry standards and knowledge.

Other associations of the tourism industry such as the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMA), the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), the Philippine Council of Associations and Association Executives (PCAAE), the Tourism Council of the Philippines (TCP) and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) have always been staunch partners of TPB not just in promoting the country as a prime MICE destination, but also serve as Counselors of TPB'S MICE Advisory Council.

Backed by government

Christina Garcia Frasco

The government provides full support to these initiatives, aligning with the National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028 spearheaded by the Department of Tourism Undersecretary Christina Garcia Frasco. This plan aims to establish a resilient, sustainable, and competitive tourism industry that showcases the Philippines' rich culture, heritage, and identity.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos has consistently encapsulated this vision, stating, “Under this administration, the tourism industry has shifted its gaze to becoming more than just a promotion arm of the government. We are committed to ensuring that travel is convenient, connected, and equitable for travelers and locals alike, enhancing key and emerging tourist destinations with robust infrastructure and essential services.”

To further boost the appeal of the Philippines as a MICE destination, the TPB is offering various incentives for large groups, ranging from airport assistance to hosting themed dinners and entertainment. This support has been extended to groups from 200 to 2,000, enhancing the overall experience for MICE participants and organizers.

First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos’ initiative to construct the Philippine International Exhibition Center in Pasay City marks a significant milestone for the MICE industry. This forthcoming landmark is set to become the ultimate hub for MICE activities, providing state-of-the-art facilities that will elevate the Philippines' standing in the global MICE arena. More convention centers are also set to rise throughout the country, one of which is the biggest SMX convention center, set to open in Cebu in 2026.

Recent events like the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and the Mactan Airport’s Sugbo Tourism Event underscore the region's potential as a MICE destination, demonstrating the diverse and rich opportunities available across the country . The TPB's commitment to regional development ensures that the benefits of MICE growth are widespread, fostering economic development and cultural exchange in various locales.

A Promising Future

Data presented by Grand View Research, values the Asia-Pacific MICE market at USD 183.47 billion last year and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.0% up to 2030. The Philippine MICE Conference (MICECON) remains the largest gathering of MICE professionals since its inception in 2010. This event serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders to learn from global experts, discover new trends, approaches, and methods, and draw inspiration to elevate the Philippine MICE and tourism industry.

MICECON's expansion into a two-year program includes a comprehensive educational agenda for local stakeholders in the first year and a buyers’ invitational and business exchange program (MICECONnect) in the following year, reflecting its commitment to strengthening the MICE industry sectors.

At the heart of all these initiatives is the Department of Tourism’s award-winning Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) training program, which continues to make significant strides. With nearly 3,000 trainings and over 148,000 trained stakeholders nationwide in 2023, the FBSE promotes exceptional service and highlights the intrinsic values of Filipino hospitality. This emphasis on warm and sincere ways of welcoming visitors reinforces the country’s reputation as a top-tier, inviting destination for international guests, truly embodying the essence of “We Take Your Business to Heart.”

Ending her opening speech at MICECON, Nograles said: “With MICE Philippines: We Take Your Business to Heart, our goal is clear: We will establish the Philippines as a premier MICE destination known for its world-class experiences, top notch facilities and unparalleled hospitality.”

EastWest Bank’s ESTA Hailed as Mobile Banking and Payment Initiative of the Year at Asian Banking and Finance Awards 2024

EastWest Bank was recently recognized and awarded the Mobile Banking and Payment Initiative of the Year for its innovative EastWest System Tech Assistant (ESTA), which was honored as the Mobile Banking and Payment Initiative of the Year at the Asian Banking and Finance Awards 2024. The award ceremony took place last July 4, 2024 at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Center Singapore, recognizing ESTA for its groundbreaking contributions to the digital banking landscape in the Philippines.

The Asian Banking and Finance Awards remains as Asia Pacific region's most prestigious awards programme for banks and annually recognizes the industry's outstanding players. The Asian Banking & Finance Awards offers a platform for banks, like EastWest, to showcase their innovative solutions, products, services, and deals that have proven to be game-changers in the industry.

Award-Winning Innovation

Since its launch in 2020, ESTA has been redefining the digital banking experience for EastWest Bank’s credit cardholders, marking a significant milestone in the bank’s commitment to technological advancement and customer service excellence. ESTA leverages the widespread use of Facebook Messenger to offer a platform where credit cardholders can effortlessly perform a variety of credit card services, making it the first of its kind in the Philippines.

Key Features of ESTA

Designed to cater to the modern-day banking needs of its users, ESTA provides full-service functionality equivalent to a mobile app or web portal for credit card services, with several enhanced features. Users can access real-time transaction and balance displays, view unbilled, current, and historical transactions, and request limit increases, supplementary cards, and points redemption. Additionally, they can lock and unlock accounts in real-time for security purposes, fulfill installment conversions immediately, and update customer information on the spot. The platform also allows for promotions search and display, submission of customer service support tickets with two-way capability, and querying of EastWest credit card product features and related information through ChatGPT.

As of now, ESTA is the only locally known customer-facing electronic platform with AI capabilities, setting it apart from other industry players. Its exceptional performance is evidenced by a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 60 for credit card servicing and an impressive NPS of 81 for application onboarding.

ESTA consistently generates over PHP 1 billion in credit card installment transactions monthly, with zero fraud incidents, highlighting its high engagement and relevance among EastWest’s credit card client base. The platform’s agility and adaptability are demonstrated by its ability to implement new features rapidly, such as a staff referral program completed within a week upon request.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of digital banking solutions. With Facebook Messenger having a 93% penetration rate in the Philippines, ESTA’s presence on this platform played a crucial role in mitigating the effects of the pandemic on EastWest’s credit card business.
