TikTok Shop Boosts Filipino MSMEs at National MSME Summit 2024

TikTok Shop, the e-commerce platform of TikTok, played a pivotal role in empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at the National MSME Summit 2024. Held during the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development Week, the summit, organized by Go Negosyo and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), focused on the theme "Innovate to Elevate: Empowering MSMEs for Sustainable Growth."

The event brought together industry leaders, government officials, and entrepreneurs to discuss strategies for leveraging digitalization to enhance competitiveness and drive sustainable growth among Filipino MSMEs. TikTok Shop emerged as a key player in this conversation, emphasizing its commitment to supporting local businesses through its innovative Shoppertainment platform.

"We are excited to partner with TikTok Shop in accelerating the growth of Filipino MSMEs," said Joey Concepcion, Founder of Go Negosyo. "TikTok Shop's unique blend of content and commerce provides a powerful platform for MSMEs to reach a wider audience and boost sales."

Filipina Sells Suman Online Gets Boost from PLDT Global and DMW

Annalyn Fernan, a 37-year-old from Cavite, sells delicious rice cakes (suman) and other traditional snacks online. This business is super important for her family since her husband, who worked overseas, passed away last year.

Annalyn's mom started the business during the pandemic, and it's been doing great! To get even more customers,Annalyn uses her phone and the internet to sell on social media. "We get orders from all over, even from Filipinos working abroad who see my posts," she said. "That's why having good internet is key!"

On top of selling yummy snacks, Annalyn is also a busy mom of two! She's growing her business even more by offering phone reloading and bill payments. This cool program is from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and PLDT Global. They gave Annalyn a package to help her succeed, including a new phone, marketing materials, and signs to attract customers.

Annalyn is so grateful for the help. "The money I earn helps us so much," she said. "Thanks to PLDT Global for working with the DMW to make things easier for us!"

People from both DMW and PLDT Global even visited Annalyn to see her business! They were really impressed.Annalyn thanked the DMW for their ongoing support. "They've been there for us every step of the way," she said. "I hope they can help more families like mine!"

The DMW's main guy, Secretary Hans Cacdac, said, "This program shows our commitment to helping Filipinos working abroad and their families. We partner with great companies like PLDT Global to offer helpful programs."

PLDT Global does even more than just this livelihood program. They also offer digital skills training for Filipinos working overseas. Last year, they provided grants, gadgets, and training for cacao farming to Filipinos who came back home from working abroad. They even gave educational kits to the kids of a Filipino worker in Qatar!

"We hope by working together with the DMW, we can improve the lives of Filipinos and help them achieve their dreams," said Albert Villa-Real, the big boss at PLDT Global.

This innovative initiative represents a collaborative effort between the TPB, the private sector, and government bodies, all united by the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence.

First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos’ initiative to construct the Philippine International Exhibition Center in Pasay City marks a significant milestone for the MICE industry. This forthcoming landmark is set to become the ultimate hub for MICE activities, providing state-of-the-art facilities that will elevate the Philippines' standing in the global MICE arena. More convention centers are also set to rise throughout the country, one of which is the biggest SMX convention center, set to open in Cebu in 2026.

Recent events like the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and the Mactan Airport’s Sugbo Tourism Event underscore the region's potential as a MICE destination, demonstrating the diverse and rich opportunities available across the country . The TPB's commitment to regional development ensures that the benefits of MICE growth are widespread, fostering economic development and cultural exchange in various locales.

A Promising Future

Data presented by Grand View Research, values the Asia-Pacific MICE market at USD 183.47 billion last year and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.0% up to 2030. The Philippine MICE Conference (MICECON) remains the largest gathering of MICE professionals since its inception in 2010. This event serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders to learn from global experts, discover new trends, approaches, and methods, and draw inspiration to elevate the Philippine MICE and tourism industry.

MICECON's expansion into a two-year program includes a comprehensive educational agenda for local stakeholders in the first year and a buyers’ invitational and business exchange program (MICECONnect) in the following year, reflecting its commitment to strengthening the MICE industry sectors.

Coca-Cola PH continues to empower micro-retailers with the launch of new centers to provide entrepreneurial skills

Coca-Cola Philippines aims to empower more micro-entrepreneurs nationwide with the launch of Centers for Entrepreneurship (CFEs) under the digital Sari-Sari Store Training and Access to Resources(iSTAR) program in seven key areas. The CFEs, located in Davao del Norte, Cagayan de Oro, Taguig City, Nueva Ecija, Cebu, Bacolod City, and Camarines Sur, will serve as sustainable hubs offering training, mentoring, and financial support to help small business owners thrive.

The iSTAR program is designed to empower individuals in entrepreneurship and equip them with the necessary skills through the use of digital platforms for starting and managing retail businesses.

"At Coca-Cola Philippines, we are committed to supporting the entrepreneurial spirit and unlocking the potential of aspiring entrepreneurs. The launch of the iSTAR Centers for Entrepreneurship is a testament to our dedication to foster economic growth and sustainable development at the community level," said Coca-Cola Philippines President Tony del Rosario during the launch of the CFE in Tagum, Davao del Norte.

The program is the result of a public-private partnership between the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Coca-Cola Philippines. This collaboration supports Coca-Cola Philippines’ broader economic empowerment strategy to break the cycle of generational poverty. 

For more than a decade, this partnership has expanded with seven regional microfinance and non-governmental institutions across the country, making iSTAR’s modules free and accessible nationwide through the TESDA Online Program.

iSTAR aims to address key barriers that hinder the development of women entrepreneurs, such as limited access to training, resources, and mentorship. Through its expanded digital platform, iSTAR has empowered over 150,000 micro-entrepreneurs, surpassing its 2025 target of 100,000 graduates. Earlier this year, the program was showcased at the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

"These CFEs represent hope, opportunity, and the collective effort of our partners like TESDA and the Tagum City Council of Women Foundation Inc., whose dedication is instrumental in making this initiative a reality. Together, with a shared vision of economic empowerment, we can bridge existing gaps and create a truly inclusive environment where micro-entrepreneurship can thrive,” added del Rosario.

TESDA also acknowledges how the iSTAR program helps bridge the digital divide among micro and small businesses. "The Philippines is lagging behind in digitalization, but with Coca-Cola Philippines introducing this digital platform to educate and empower women, we are heading in the right direction," said TESDA Deputy Director General for Special Concerns Felizardo Colambo.

Building a network of sustainable support

The CFEs represent a strategic expansion of the iSTAR Program by establishing regional hubs that aim to provide business development, training, and support to micro-entrepreneurs.


The hubs will be managed by a network of trusted partners, including microfinance institutions, cooperatives, civil society organizations, and the local government units of the hubs’ locations. This initiative reinforces Coca-Cola Philippines' commitment to building the capacity of Filipinos in entrepreneurship and empowering them through the strategic use of digital platforms and the fostering of business networks.

"When the CFE was offered to us at the Tagum City Council of Women Foundation (TCCWFI), we accepted it with open arms, without hesitation. We immediately saw the need for it, not just in our area, but throughout Mindanao. We are grateful to the City Government of Tagum and Coca-Cola Philippines for bringing this initiative to our city,” said TCCWFI President Alma Uy.

Scaling impact with technology

The iSTAR Program and CFEs are among Coca-Cola Philippines’ projects that seek to leverage technology to amplify the reach and impact of its support for micro-retailers. It’s similar to the Tindahan Extra Mile (TEM): Balik PET Bottle program, which utilizes innovative methods to promote the circularity of plastic packaging.

TEM, in collaboration with the Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST) and the Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners (PASCO), aims to support micro-retailers as frontline environmental advocates by helping transform their sari-sari stores and carinderias into collection points for recyclable PET bottles. With increased visibility and proximity to these drop-off bins, consumers are encouraged to dispose of their plastic bottles. Micro-retailers earn environmental points for collecting bottles, which can be redeemed for cashback and products, thereby strengthening their businesses.

Graduates of the iSTAR program are provided support to join Coca-Cola Philippines’ network of TEM partners so they can continue to grow their businesses and inspire their communities to keep their surroundings clean.

Schneider Electric named the world’s most sustainable company by Time magazine and Statista


Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has topped the "World's Most Sustainable Companies for 2024" list by Time magazine and Statista. Time and Statista highlighted Schneider Electric's technological expertise and the Schneider Sustainability Impact (SSI) program. As part of the SM MOA Arena’s CSR program, it partners annually with SM Cares and Autism Society Philippines to host the Angels Walk for Autism, with its culminating gathering held at the SM MOA Arena. To maintain its world-class standards, the SM MOA Arena has been undergoing a three-year upgrade program of its facilities that started in early 2022. Prior to the hosting of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, SM Prime Holdings (the SM MOA Arena’s parent company) allocated more than US$ 10 million to upgrade key features like its turnstiles, center-hung scoreboard, Media Mesh, PA system, dugouts and back-of-house rooms, spectator seating, internet connectivity, 5G capacity, among others. All these improvements are to ensure it stays ahead of the growing demands of world-class events. Trainings and personnel improvement programs are also a key focus of the management as it reinforces its customer service excellence.

Remarkable milestones for the past 12 years

2012: Lady Gaga's "Born This Way Ball" tour debuted at the SM MOA Arena, which opened a world-class venue for the Filipino people and headlined JLO, Jonas Brothers, David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Big Bang for the rest of the year.

2013: The SM MOA Arena ensured all efforts are made to host major sporting events such as NBA Global Games (the first and only NBA sanctioned event in Southeast Asia), FIBA Asia Championships, UAAP Basketball and NCAA Basketball opening, and UAAP Volleyball. International artists Aerosmith, Alicia Keys, Paramore, Linkin Park, Swedish House Mafia, Pitbull, Super Junior, 2PM, and Psy also performed in 2013.

2014: The SM MOA Arena unveiled the Media Mesh—a 700 sqm. LED digital billboard that is considered the first and biggest one in the country. With a promise to showcase world-class shows, the venue headlined BTS, 2NE1, Mariah Carey, Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift with the amazing talent of OPM icon, Gary Valenciano’s electrifying “Arise” concert. Tennis icons wowed the crowd at the first International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) where Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Andy Murray, and Ana Ivanovic played. 

2015: The SM MOA Arena welcomed prominent world leaders such as Pope Francis and members of the APEC. The team also ensured the success of the first-ever UFC Fight Night Manila.   All of these while serving the fans of Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Michael BublĂ©, Maroon 5, Incubus, Backstreet Boys, Chris Brown, The Vamps, The 1975 and more. The IPTL returned to the arena with the world famous and crowd favorite Rafael Nadal.

2016: The SM MOA Arena emphasizes its dedication to host family shows such as the 2nd Monster Jam Live and Disney On Ice, which played at the venue for the first time. Top-tier fans of Madonna, Andrea Bocelli, Selena Gomez, Il Divo, and EXO, enjoyed celebrating with their idols the rest of the year. Internationally sanctioned FIVB and FIBA competitions were also held during the year.

2017: The SM MOA Arena hosted several international beauty pageants including the 65th Grand Coronation Night of prestigious Miss Universe competition. Britney Spears, Shawn Mendez, Ariana Grande, Seventeen, The Chainsmokers and Regine Velasquez were the top billers for the year. Cirque du Soliel and Disney On Ice continues to bring delightful moments for the Filipino families.

2018: The year the SM MOA Arena gave homage to parent company SM, which celebrated its 60th anniversary for providing “AweSM” experiences for every Filipino family. It was also the year when Filipino fans witnessed the spectacular two-night performance of Celine Dion, one of the best-selling female artists of all time. Other top billers include Bruno Mars, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, Sam Smith, Paramore, Niall Horan, Seventeen, Super Junior, iKON, Winner and EXO.

2019: Year of proud and long-standing affinity to the SM group, as the SM MOA Arena hosted Blackpink, Twice, EXO, Josh Groban, Maroon 5, Lany, Shawn Mendes, Boyzone, and the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

2020: The SM MOA Arena repurposed as a mega swabbing facility in partnership with the national government through Bases Conversion Development Authority and Philippine Red Cross to contribute to the nation-building mission of helping everyone navigate the global pandemic.

2021: The SM MOA Arena launches the #ArenaSafe program. Guided by international protocols, being safe while enjoying live entertainment and sports events was a consideration for the venue.

2022: Uplifting the venue’s standards to accommodate more events was the goal for the SM MOA Arena after transitioning out of the pandemic bubble. Since then, the venue has hosted over 150 shows, including Lany’s sold-out, five-day concert, as well as global chart-topper Billie Eilish’s first Manila show.
