vivo partners with UA&P Men's Futsal Team to launch 2024 Inter-Collegiate Futsal League

Global smartphone leader, vivo, has proudly partnered with the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) Physical Education (PE) Department and Men's Futsal Varsity Team on June 3, 2024, underscoring its commitment to health, fitness, and community engagement.

As a prestigious partner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and UEFA Euro 2024, vivo extends its support to the local level by sponsoring UA&P's Inter-Collegiate Futsal Tournament and High 5 Men's Open Tournament.

The upcoming event, named the UA&P - vivo PH Inter-Collegiate Futsal League 2024, will run from August to December 2024.

Futsal or futbol sala, an indoor version of football, continues to grow in popularity, and vivo’s sponsorship aims to further boost its visibility and participation.

The official contract signing ceremony saw UA&P represented by Tournament Director and UA&P Team Manager Angelica Ysabelle Ang, Tournament Chair and PE Department Head Christian Dominguez, and Team Manager Kassandra Benipayo. vivo Philippines was represented by Brand Marketing Department Head Liu Lu. 

In a symbolic gesture of partnership, both organizations exchanged Little V and Uappy the Dragon dolls.

Liu Lu expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We at vivo are thrilled to support the UA&P Men's Futsal Varsity Team. This collaboration is a testament to our dedication to fostering sportsmanship and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this tournament will have on the community."

Several futsal players attended the event, enjoying the opportunity to test out vivo’s latest smartphone models, further highlighting the brand’s innovative and community-oriented approach.

Ashoka Philippines is looking for innovators creating systems change

Ashoka Philippines

Founded in 1980, Ashoka has created the first and largest professional network that supports leading social entrepreneurs around the world, with nearly 4,000 Ashoka Fellows from 93 countries.

Fellows are best described by the impactful actions that they take whether that means getting the government to pass beneficial laws, creating new ways to conduct businesses, or shifting the mindset of society around a social issue. Most importantly, their efforts are aimed towards the good of everyone, not just their personal interests.

In short, Ashoka Fellows are pragmatic visionaries who create systems change.

Systems change entails long-term and deep impact. One framework envisions achieving it in three ways: 

Scaling Up: changing policy or impacting laws, to change institutional rules
Scaling Out: replicating a particular social innovation in different communities to reach greater numbers of people
Scaling Deep: changing the deeper values, cultural beliefs, meanings and practices of people, and the qualities of their relationships 


In the Philippines, Ashoka Fellows who pioneer systems change come from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds. Initially, many of them didn’t think of their work as systems change, entrepreneurship or innovation. They generally started their work to solve a problem or close a gap that made them angry, worried them, or affected their community in a negative way. There are currently 17 in the Philippines. Here are a few examples: 

Ryan Gersava is the youngest of eleven and spent his childhood in Sultan Kudarat. Despite living in abject poverty, his parents always put great importance on their children’s education and Ryan and his siblings were always at the top of their class. It was during his first year in college that Ryan discovered he was positive for Hepatitis B. Despite graduating with impressive marks, he failed to secure a job due to his diagnosis. 

In 2015, he co-founded Virtualahan with his siblings to make employment accessible to marginalized sectors, including people with disabilities, solo parents, persons deprived of liberty, etc. Virtualahan has created a program to train students on in-demand skills. This is combined with other equally important elements, namely, wellbeing sessions, coaching, and partnering with companies to make their hiring more inclusive. This approach seeks to address the employment issue holistically. Externally, trainees are set up for success as they are better matched with appropriate jobs. At the same time, trainees also experience a deep internal transformation; Virtualahan nurtures their self-confidence and self-worth so that they advocate for themselves. The company also reports a 60% employment rate for over a thousand graduates. 

Tina Liamzon was an activist all throughout her school years. As a young professional, she immersed herself in civil society organizations, especially those from rural areas. In 1990, she eventually moved to Italy where her husband had accepted a position. She met many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Europe and learned of their challenges. Interconnected problems such as difficulty integrating with foreign cultures, the inaccessiblity of financial literacy, and the scarcity of well-paying professional jobs in the Philippines created systems that trapped OFWs in difficult, demeaning, and dangerous jobs.

It was in middle age when she identified the right combination of elements to activate the agency of OFWs. With her husband, she founded ALSE OF-LIFE (Ateneo Overseas Filipinos’ Leadership, Innovation, Financial Literacy, and Social Entrepreneurship) to equip Filipino migrants with skills and mindsets for self-sufficiency. The program has reached 26 countries globally and has 4500 alumni, many of whom give back to society as volunteers.

Bai Rohaniza “Honey” Sumdad-Usman was born into an inter-faith family. Her father is a Maranao Muslim, while her mother is a Christian who converted to Islam. When she was two years old, her family relocated to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and she was seven years old during the outbreak of the Gulf War. She vividly remembers explosions, missiles, and the daily routine of preparing for a possible chemical attack. 

When Honey returned to the Philippines, she heard similar stories from her countrymen and envisioned peace as a way of life for all Filipinos. She recognized the influence the youth have on society and founded the Teach Peace Build Peace Movement (TPBPM). TPBPM teaches children to aspire to be peace advocates through formal and non-formal Peace Education which includes music, arts, games, sports and community service. At the time of its founding, TPBPM was the only peace program in the Philippines for elementary-aged children in both conflict and non-conflict areas. Focusing on a young demographic follows Honey’s belief and experience that prejudice and discrimination are the foundation of conflict and ultimately normalize violent views within children. 

Achieving systems change is beyond challenging. Though it can feel lonely, no one person can reach it alone. Every changemaker in history was successful because they had a support system or dream team to help them out. 

To support pioneers of systems change who have impact at a national or even continental level, Ashoka offers them a lifelong Fellowship since changing systems is a long-term commitment and solutions must evolve with ever-changing problems. Rather than going through the typical application processes of other fellowships, Fellows are scouted, nominated by people like you.

Bayad Sapat Dapat: Financial Literacy as a Pillar for Filipino Resilience Amid Economic Challenges

With the lingering economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2023 proved to be a financially challenging year for Filipinos. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported a significant rise in the inflation rate from 2.4 percent in 2020 to 6.0 percent in 2023, marking the highest inflation rate in 15 years. This stark increase underscores the urgent need for enhanced financial literacy among Filipinos, particularly the youth, to build financial resilience.

Bayad and DepEd's Initiative: "Bayad Sapat Dapat"

In response to these economic challenges, Bayad, the pioneer and industry leader in bill payments, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), has been actively promoting financial literacy through its comprehensive school program, "Bayad Sapat Dapat." This initiative aims to instill the importance of financial literacy and money management among Filipino students during their formative years.

"Bayad Sapat Dapat" is designed to help young Filipinos develop a financial mindset that emphasizes economic sufficiency and prudent financial management. By equipping students with essential financial skills, the program seeks to empower households and communities to navigate and withstand financial adversities.

Celebrating Five Years of Financial Literacy Advocacy

Now in its fifth year, "Bayad Sapat Dapat" continues to make a significant impact. The program's highlight, the Financial Literacy Quiz Bee, tests students on financial management, savings, and priority-setting. The most recent quiz bee took place on May 3, 2024, at Mandaue City Central School, Cebu, with the supervision of Bayad, DepEd, and Marylindbert International, Inc.

Out of 3,000 students from various divisions in Region 7, 43 were chosen as finalists. Shandy Monica Taborada, a Grade 12 student from Mandaue City Science High School, emerged as this year's champion. Shandy reflected on her experience, stating, “Participating in the Bayad Sapat Dapat Quiz Bee extends beyond just winning the competition. It enabled us students to expand our understanding of key financial principles and improve our decision-making skills.”

Joining Shandy in the ranks of financial literacy champions were Christine Ella Dabuco Fuentes from Lahug Night High School, Cebu City (2nd place), Anthony Tenebroso from Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial Dumaguete Science High School, Negros Oriental (3rd place), Jinky O. Casio from Science and Technology Education Center, Lapu-Lapu City (4th place), and Cherry Mae Decena from Mabolo National High School, Cebu City (5th place).

A Collaborative Effort for a Financially Literate Generation

Mandaue City Science High School Principal Leslie Joy R. Paňa emphasized the importance of the initiative, saying, “Now more than ever, DepEd is steadfast in driving forth the Financial Education Policy in the K to 12 Curriculum. This is why we proactively support the Bayad Sapat Dapat Comprehensive School Program as we harmonize our efforts in raising a generation of financially literate individuals.”

Bayad’s AVP and Head for Corporate Branding & Marketing Services, Wendell Kristian P. Labre, highlighted the increasing financial vulnerabilities facing the nation. He remarked, “Together with the Department of Education, we are even more committed to upholding the financial health of Filipino households and communities by empowering the youth to make wise financial decisions.”

Bayad Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer, Dennis S. Gatuslao, stressed the crucial role of financial literacy in economic recovery. He stated, “It is crucial that at this point in time, students take to heart the importance of financial literacy in the economic recovery of our country.”

Bayad President and CEO, Lawrence Y. Ferrer, concluded by underscoring the company's mission, “Our goal in Bayad has always been anchored on elevating the standard of living of Filipinos. We continue to amplify our advocacy on Financial Literacy to expose students early on to wise financial habits.”

Innovations Pitching Contest

With over 60 submissions, the competition was fierce, culminating in ten finalist projects. These projects showcased a diverse array of innovations, including advancements in agriculture to improve irrigation systems and support farmers, healthcare applications like a portable glucometer, and solutions for solid waste management. The grand prize was awarded to a team from FAITH Colleges in Batangas for their development of "GestuLearn," an interactive learning system that utilizes real-time hand detection, tracking, and gesture recognition to assist in teaching students with disabilities. Young engineering student Ivan Renz Eser, the winning team’s leader, is currently doing his on-the-job-training at Xinyx Design as a Design Automation intern, a testament to how UNLOCKED paves the way for career opportunities and drives innovation in the Philippines.

On top of the chance for their ideas or inventions to get picked up by an investor, prizes are available for the Top 3 student groups. Php 70,000 goes to the grand winner, while first and second runners-up will win Php 20,000 and Php 10,000, respectively.

This gathering was organized by Rex Education, in collaboration with esteemed partners, including the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council, and Center for Local Governance and Professional Development, Inc. (CLGPD). The ceremony was a celebration and heartfelt tribute to the integrity, respect and professionalism, unity of purpose, excellence, and resilience of LGUs and local chief executives (LCEs).

Continued Support for Responsible Mining to Drive Economic Growth and Empower Local Communities

Mining companies underline the need to balance economic and social development with environmental stewardship to tap the full potential of the Philippine mining industry

Mining companies are calling on industry stakeholders to strengthen support for responsible mining, underlining the industry’s untapped potential to further drive economic growth and support social development at the national and local level, while fostering environmental stewardship.

Mining company representatives echoed the sentiment as the industry gathered to launch “Living with a Brighter Future,” a documentary developed as part of the industry’s Better Mining, Brighter Future communication and advocacy campaign. The campaign, which aims to raise awareness about responsible mining, is a joint initiative of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines; the Philippine Nickel Industry Association; the Chamber of Mines - Caraga; the Alliance of Responsible MIners and Operators - Visayas; the Eastern Rizal Minders Association; the Mindanao Association of Responsible Quarry Operators Foundation, Inc.; and the Philippine Mining & Exploration Association.

The "Living with a Brighter Future" documentary provides a comprehensive narrative of responsible mining practices, portraying the collaborative efforts between mining companies, local communities, and local government units. Through the eyes of company representatives and community members, the documentary showcased the positive socio-economic impact and environmental sustainability initiatives of the mining industry across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. 

“Mining companies have made substantial contributions to local communities through its Social Development and Management Program or SDMP. Additionally, the industry’s environmental commitments have been significant,” said Atty. Mike Toledo, Chairperson of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines.

From 2002 and 2027, mining companies have pledged a total of PHP 31.81 billion towards SDMP initiatives, with PHP 20.3 billion earmarked for the period spanning 2002 to 2024. Since 2002, SDMPs have positively impacted over 1,160 barangays across the country. 

SDMPs serve as a collaborative platform where mining companies, the local government, and the community come together to bridge the gaps in both physical and social infrastructures within the communities they operate in. Through constant consultations with the host and neighboring communities, mining projects are able to meet the needs of residents and offer impactful solutions that yield both immediate and long-term benefits. During the event’s panel discussion, industry leaders highlighted initiatives such as employment creation, education and healthcare investments, infrastructure development, and the preservation of indigenous culture through programs like the IP Culture Revitalization Program.

On the other hand, the Philippine mining industry has provided PHP 387.81 billion, as of December 2023, to environmental protection and enhancement programs. In addition, the mining industry has committed PHP 6.72 billion for the rehabilitation of decommissioned mines. One concrete example of the initiatives of the industry is the number of trees planted where, as of December 2023, more than 50 million seedlings covering almost 45 hectares of land have been planted by the industry. Of these planted trees, approximately 90% have survived.

“Through innovation and modern technologies, the mining sector is reducing its environmental footprint and paving the way for a future where economic development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Progressive rehabilitation efforts, coupled with investments in reforestation and environmental protection, demonstrate the industry's commitment to responsible stewardship of natural resources,” Atty. Toledo added.

The documentary highlighted that the industry contributed PHP 170.1 billion (in current prices) to the Philippines’ GDP in 2022 alone and employed over 212,000 individuals as of 2023.

Pocholo Domondon

In his keynote presentation, PWC Partner, Mr. Pocholo Domondon further reiterated the industry’s economic contributions citing NEDA’s 2023 Philippine Development Report which stated that while there was an 18.5 percent decline in the total net FDI, significant contributions were still noted for manufacturing, transportation and storage, and mining and quarrying in terms of increased net equity FDI. In the same report, the government also listed the fiscal regime for mining as one of the tax measures that the government is discussing as part of efforts to achieve its fiscal targets until 2028. Further, the government has also cited the mining sector, along with the manufacturing sector, as essential sectors expected to support the government’s 4PH program. The 4PH program aims to build 1 million housing units yearly until 2028.

As the industry moves forward, their collective commitment underscores a shared vision for a sustainable future where responsible mining plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth, fostering social development, and preserving the environment for generations to come.

PFIP LGBTQ+ Workplace Inclusion Report 2024 Highlights Positive Strides in Philippine Workplace LGBTQ+ Inclusion

The Philippine Financial Industry Pride (PFIP) unveiled its 2024 LGBTQ+ Workplace Inclusion Report on April 30, 2024, at the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Statistics Auditorium in Diliman, Quezon City. The event marked a significant step in assessing the current landscape of LGBTQ+ workplaces across the Philippines, drawing insights from hundreds of companies in various sectors and business hubs.

Driven by its commitment to advancing LGBTQ+ workplace inclusivity, the non-profit organization, consisting of LGBTQ+ employee resource group representatives and human resource/diversity professionals from private firms in the Philippines, takes proactive steps to showcase policy progress and identify challenges ahead. The event was well-attended by corporate leaders, HR professionals, LGBTQ+ advocates, and scholars, converging to discuss the findings and exchange ideas for fostering a more inclusive workplace environment. PFIP’s key findings showcased concrete progress in LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion, vibrant discussions and successful corporate examples that underscored the positive impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) policies on workplace culture.

The 2024 PFIP LGBTQ+ Workplace Inclusion Report revealed encouraging trends:

85% of companies now have LGBTQ+ inclusion or anti-discrimination policies in place, while 86% have established grievance procedures for LGBTQ+ employees. Furthermore, 78% offer medical benefits to both married different-sex couples and same-sex domestic partners, and 73% have active LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groups. Public support for LGBTQ+ inclusion has grown, with 79% of companies expressing this commitment, reflecting a significant cultural shift towards acceptance and advocacy. DE&I training is also on the rise, with 80% of companies providing comprehensive programs.

These statistics show that many Philippine companies are fostering safer and more equitable work environments conducive to employees' success. The launch event also provided an opportunity to review PFIP's broader initiatives, such as the "PFIP Playbook: For LGBT+ Inclusive Workplaces in the Philippines," and the nationwide caravan conducted in 2023 to promote these best practices across the country. The emphasis on partnerships with LGUs, local LGBTQ+ groups, and other allied organizations has proven instrumental in fostering greater inclusivity.

Looking ahead, PFIP announced plans for the July 2024 Pride Summit, the largest DE&I conference in the Philippines, which is expected to further amplify the conversation and drive additional LGBTQ+ workplace initiatives. The summit aims to encourage corporate decision-makers to continue advocating for inclusion and diversity.

Reflecting on the event's impact and future aspirations, PFIP Chairperson, Weena Ekid, said, “To corporate decision-makers, continue to champion for inclusion and embrace diversity. Build a workplace where every individual can thrive authentically, regardless of who they are or who they love. As they embark on this journey towards a more inclusive future, they are urged to lead the charge towards a world where everyone is valued and respected. Grab cools down thousands of street workers, delivery riders on Labor Day



The leading superapp provides relief to street workers and delivery riders enduring the summer heat in Quezon City, Cebu City, and Davao City

In honor of Labor Day, Grab Philippines has cooled down thousands of street workers and other skilled professionals at its Grab Palamig Spots. 

In light of the cautionary heat indices averaging 39°C to 40°C in Metro Manila, Davao, and Cebu, the Grab Palamig Spots were strategically stationed in high-traffic and accessible locations across these regions: Quezon City Memorial Circle, Agdao Public Market, and the SM City Cebu Terminal. The spots served as cold and convenient rest stops for street sweepers, traffic enforcers, delivery riders, and other workers who spend their days under the heat of the sun. 

Cooling down these street workers, the Grab Palamig Spots maintained soothing temperatures as low as 16°C in its mini-lounge areas. And in a world where 'cooling down' is typically associated with the color blue, the leading superapp has reimagined it in a vibrant shade of green – offering green summer coolers like flavorful avocado and buko pandan ice creams, and crowd-favorite sodas and sweet tea drinks to its Palamig guests. 


Grab worked with the local government units of Quezon City, Davao City, and Cebu City in inviting the hard-working street workers to visit and take a refreshing break at the Grab Palamig Spots. To encourage its own delivery-partners to recharge at the spots, the leading superapp also activated special push notifications and GrabMap Pins guiding them to the exact location of the cold rest stops. 

The Grab Palamig Spots, an initiative under Grab’s No Sweat Summer campaign, is a manifestation of the superapp’s commitment to enabling all Filipinos to go through the hot season conveniently and hassle-free – with much-needed breaks and moments of respite in between. 

Showing Up for the Community

Understanding the impact of the intense summer heat on workers who make their living on the road, Grab’s very own delivery-partners volunteered to help in the distribution of the coolers to the guests at the Grab Palamig Spots. The Grab Ugnayan Advocates – a network of delivery-riders focused on community outreach, scoured the areas where the Grab Palamig Spots are to invite and assist street workers as they cooled down with Grab. 

Big Daddy, an Ugnayan Advocate, shared how he empathizes with the country’s street workers. “Ang laking epekto sa amin ng init, lalo na madalas kaming nakababad sa init ng araw. Kaya saludo ako sa mga kapwa ko rider at mga kagaya naming mga naghahanapbuhay sa kalsada. Noong narinig ko na may ganito tayong espesyal na kaganapan para sa amin at sa iba pang manggaawa sa daan, agad-agad naming napagdesisyonan na tumulong kahit sa papaano mang paraan,” Big Daddy shares.
