 35th International Nursing Research Congress

Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), through its Nursing & Patient Care Services Division - Center for Nursing Education, Advancement, and Research (CNEAR), participated in the 35th International Nursing Research Congress of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI or Sigma) on July 27 in Singapore.

The presentation, titled "IGNITE Initiative: Harnessing the Power of Collaboration and Innovative Learning in Building Competent Nurses Globally," showcased MakatiMed’s pioneering approach to nursing education. The presenters included MakatiMed Senior Nurse Educator Brigitte V. Garcia, RN, CLDP, CLSSYB; Nursing Youth Partner Laarni C. Florencio, MSN, RN, CNL (Founder of The Thinking of You Campaign, USA, and MakatiMed partner on IGNITE in 2023); and MakatiMed Senior Program Manager for CNEAR Joshua Jaime P. Nario, MA, RN, CHA, CLDP, CLSSGB.

In response to the pandemic's unprecedented challenges—shrinking resources, budget constraints, and the emigration of skilled nurses—the IGNITE Initiative was conceived to address these issues through collaborative partnerships. This project provided essential educational experiences that many healthcare organizations struggle to sustain. Initially aimed at a network of hospitals in the Philippines, IGNITE’s scope expanded globally through a partnership with the Thinking of You Kindness campaign, engaging over 4,000 attendees worldwide. Participants from the Philippines, USA, UAE, UK, Asia, and beyond praised the transformative teaching methods, including gamification and interactive activities, which facilitated a cross-cultural exchange of practices and knowledge.

Sigma, the world’s second-largest nursing organization, plays a crucial role in advancing global nursing practices. The 35th International Nursing Research Congress, themed "Sharing Insights, Advancing Care: Disseminating Nursing Research and Evidence for the Future," provided a platform for MakatiMed to share their groundbreaking initiative.

“The presentation profoundly impacted nurses, health workers, and all attendees by inspiring and motivating them. It equipped participants with new knowledge and skills, particularly in emerging healthcare trends, advanced clinical skills, and leadership development,” Nario states. "It was an honor to be selected for an oral presentation at Sigma," Garcia added. “Overall, the event fostered a strong sense of dedication and a proactive approach to enhancing healthcare practices among nurses.”

The IGNITE Initiative demonstrates MakatiMed’s dedication to addressing global healthcare challenges. By participating in the Sigma conference, MakatiMed contributes to the shaping of the future of nursing, ensuring that nurses are well-prepared to deliver high-quality care wherever they may be.

TikTok, the leading destination for short-form mobile videos, recently partnered with Autism Society Philippines, the Local Government of Quezon City, and SM Cares to host “Adbokasya sa Social Media,” an event marking National Disability Rights Week.

This initiative underscores a collaborative effort to leverage digital platforms for advocacy and inclusivity, empowering individuals with disabilities and their advocates to amplify their voices and drive positive change.

“Adbokasya sa Social Media” provided participants with practical insights and strategies to turn their social media presence into powerful advocacy tools. The event aimed to equip members of the disability community, NGOs, government agencies, and student organizations with the skills needed to build a purposeful online presence, create strategic content, engage with their communities, and navigate the challenges of online advocacy.

Empowering Through Social Media

TikTok creators Mona Magno Veluz (Mighty Magulang), Chef Gelo Guison, Riyan Portuguez (The Millennial Psych), Your Tita Baby, and Mathilda Airlines shared their insights on leveraging social media for advocacy. They discussed strategies for crafting impactful messages, simplifying content for broader understanding, and the importance of resilience in facing public scrutiny.

Mona Magno-Veluz, National Spokesperson of the Autism Society Philippines, addressed the crucial role of social media in advocacy, focusing on the need for content that is both impactful and respectful. She pointed out that while the digital age offers unprecedented opportunities for amplifying voices, it also demands a high level of responsibility from content creators.

“To truly leverage social media for advocacy, your content must reflect a clear mission and genuine intent. It’s about more than just following trends; it’s about creating meaningful, engaging content that respects and represents the community. Authenticity and consent are crucial, especially when discussing sensitive topics like disability. We need to ensure our content not only resonates but also upholds the values of respect and inclusivity,” Veluz said.

Creating Inclusive Content

The creators underscored the significant impact of content creation on public perceptions and the importance of fostering an inclusive online environment. Chef Gelo Guison and Mathilda Airlines highlighted the need for content that resonates positively and encourages resilience in the face of criticism.

Riyan Portuguez also emphasized the value of crafting messages that are both accessible and thoughtfully presented, ensuring that content is easily understood and impactful. Meanwhile, Your Tita Baby discussed how social media platforms like TikTok are pivotal in reshaping perceptions and broadening the scope of visibility for marginalized communities, including the drag community.

Ensuring a Safe and Responsible Platform

In line with these discussions, Bea Bautista, Communications Lead for Philippines and Malaysia at TikTok, emphasized the collective responsibility of creators, the platform, and users in maintaining a safe online environment.

“Creating a safe and inclusive space on TikTok is a shared responsibility. It’s crucial for creators, users, and the platform to work together to ensure a safe place where everyone can express themselves creatively and authentically, ” Bautista said. “Your posts and interactions matter—by being mindful of what you share and engage with, we can all contribute to a safer and more respectful online community.”

TikTok’s partnership with the Autism Society Philippines highlights its ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, for those fighting for disability rights and other social issues. SM Prime widens the landscape in renewable energy

Wednesday, July 31, 2024

As part of its net-zero commitment by 2040, one of Asia’s leading real estate and property developers, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), partnered with global integrated energy company TotalEnergies for the installation of a 2 Megawatt-peak (MWp) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System Rooftop project in Pasay City.

The partnership venture aligns with SM Prime’s efforts in expanding its renewable energy portfolio and affirms TotalEnergies’ commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions in various urban settings.

Designed with a power yield of 3,000 Megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity annually, the solar partnership project has over 3,672 PV panels installed and is expected to provide huge cost savings for SM Prime. Located at the MOA Square in the Mall of Asia Complex, the solar installations are expected to reduce the building’s carbon footprint by about 1,430 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

"SM Prime is proud to work alongside TotalEnergies on this project. This partnership is our commitment to sustainability and achieving Net Zero by 2040. We are also taking a proactive stance in supporting the Department of Energy’s (DOE) target of reaching 35% renewable energy by 2030. Together, we’re driving meaningful change towards a more environmentally conscious future," said John Nai Peng Ong, SM Prime Chief Finance Officer.

“We are thrilled to announce the successful deployment of solar rooftop installations at the Mall of Asia in the Philippines, marking a significant achievement in both environmental and economic sustainability for SM Prime,” said Elodie Renaud, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation Asia.

For the past few years, SM Prime continues to grow its partnerships with key clean energy players, leveraging its relationships and earned experiences to drive its environmental stewardship campaign. Capitalizing on these partnerships has provided for SM Prime huge economic, environmental, and social dividends.

In 2022, SM Prime secured a long-term deal with AboitizPower for its clean energy supply. Under the agreement, AboitizPower will provide reliable and responsibly-sourced energy from Tiwi-MakBan Geothermal Power Plants, and PV Sinag’s Power Plants, operated and managed by AboitizPower subsidiary, Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. (ARI).

The following year, SM Prime signed a memorandum of agreement with Citicore Renewable Energy Company (CREC), wherein SM Prime will source 90 megawatts (MWac) from CREC’s upcoming Lumbangan Solar Power Plant in Tuy, Batangas.

Apart from contributing to the DOE’s 35% renewable energy goal by 2030, all these partnerships are aligned with the energy department and Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) policy of expanding the adoption of Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) in the energy industry.

To date, SM Prime currently sources at least 50% of its electricity utilization from clean, renewable energy.

SM Prime supports the Philippine government’s aim to increase the country's renewable energy supply component to 50% by the year 2040. It remains committed to its role as a catalyst for economic growth, delivering innovative and sustainable lifestyle cities, thereby enriching the quality of life of millions of people. SM Prime is pursuing the next horizon on integrated property development and onward to building sustainable cities of the future.

Bangsamoro Government lays out commitments to improve education in the BARMM

Madrasah Education Strategic Pla

The Bangsamoro Government celebrated the signing of the Madrasah Education Strategic Plan for the Bangsamoro region on 18 July 2024. The Plan lays out the commitments of the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education to enhance the quality of formal madrasah education in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in the next three years.

Madrasah is an Islamic educational system that aims to develop Muslim learners to be morally upright and committed to excellence. The Ministry recognizes madrasah education’s significant role in contributing to the peace and stability, and the future development of the BARMM. The goal is to develop future Muslim professionals and innovators who could drive economic growth, peace, and stability in the region.

The Australian Government provided technical assistance to the Ministry in developing the Plan. They conducted policy reviews of madrasah education, led consultation sessions with relevant partners, and facilitated expert consultations to support the drafting process.

“As neighbours and strategic partners, Australia and the Philippines share the goal of achieving a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region – and we believe that education plays a vital role in achieving this,” said Dr Moya Collett, Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Embassy.

“I thank our friends and partners from the Ministry for their continued dedication in strengthening education policies and institutions in the BARMM. Australia remains committed to working with you in shaping a more peaceful and prosperous region.”

Under the Plan, the Ministry aims to increase the number of Bangsamoro learners – regardless of gender, physical ability, and social and economic status – by 30%. By 2025, they also aim to increase the number of formal madrasah institutions by 15%. Institutionalizing madrasahs is important because it allows the Ministry to monitor and regulate the quality of education and services they provide.

The Ministry has made great strides in integrating traditional madrasah into the Bangsamoro education system. To date, 373 formal madrasah delivering K-12 and Islamic education have been recognised. A policy guide developed with the Australian Government is also supporting the accreditation of 444 non formal madrasah. The Ministry also have plans to develop a standardised curriculum for all madrasahs, including non-formal madrasas, with the aim of accrediting them down the road.

Mohagher M. Iqbal, Minister of MBHTE said: “Strengthening madrasah education represents 'unity in diversity.' It demonstrates Bangsamoro’s firm commitment to preserving our region's rich historical, religious, and educational heritage while creating an inclusive environment where every learner, regardless of background, can succeed.”

“Madrasah education is integral to our people’s aspiration to shape our educational policies and systems. Therefore, the Bangsamoro deserves genuine autonomy that all parties should honor. A thriving autonomy is the true solution to the recurring internal conflicts in the region.”

Schneider Electric introduces scalable decarbonization roadmap for PH manufacturing, donates P5M worth of equipment to Dualtech

Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and digital automation, announced a scalable decarbonization roadmap for the manufacturing sector in the Philippines during the recent Go Industry 2024: Driving towards a Net Zero Industry event held at The Mills Country Club, Laguna co-hosted with Dualtech Training Center Foundation, Inc.

The event was attended by leaders from the Laguna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Climate Change Commission (CCC) Philippines, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Dr. Song Pei Chua, Business Development Manager for Chemicals, Schneider Electric East Asia discusses the decarbonization roadmap for the Philippine manufacturing sector.

The decarbonization roadmap outlines four key strategies that the sector can implement gradually to reduce carbon footprint:
  • Electrifying operations through microgrid optimization
  • Reducing energy consumption through digitalization and automation
  • Replacing energy sources with renewable energy such as solar energy, wind power, and hydropower
  • Engaging the entire value chain to design and build for sustainability and to offset carbon emissions, enabling a circular economy

"Our approach to decarbonization involves not just transforming our energy supply but also optimizing our processes through electrification," said Dr. Song Pei Chua, Business Development Manager for Chemicals, Schneider Electric East Asia. "Strategic planning, digitization, and a steadfast commitment to efficiency and sustainability are at the core of manufacturing and industrial operations."

Schneider Electric's Sustainability Business Team helps industries achieve their carbon neutrality targets by developing customized digital-centric strategies. They provide advisory services to establish a baseline, understand current energy use, and create a comprehensive roadmap towards carbon neutrality.

Deployment of Schneider Electric’s proprietary and award-winning cloud-based platform EcoStruxure Resource Advisor helps collect and analyze energy consumption data. With this, businesses can develop better energy and sustainability strategies. Software trainings are conducted by Schneider Electric to help educate partners on how to maximize the software to enable effective application into their operations.

During the event, CCC and UNDP both emphasized the significant role the private sector plays in achieving the country's climate goals. “Shifting to digital operations is crucial for sectors aiming to reduce carbon emissions and meet the targets established by the nationally determined contribution (NDC) implementation plan," CCC Executive Assistant Raul Villegas stated.

Schneider Electric Empowering Youth to Drive Digital Transformation

Schneider Electric's commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental initiatives. This is demonstrated by the company’s 5-year partnership with Dualtech where Schneider Electric has committed to provide PHP5 million worth of equipment and instructor training.

Dualtech, accredited by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), offers a 2-year Electromechanics Technology course combining electrical, mechanical, and electronics disciplines. In response to the global demand for skilled workers, the institution is modernizing its training programs and facilities to accommodate more scholars and to address shortages of training equipment and tools.

The company aims to be carbon neutral in operations by 2025, save 800 million tons of carbon annually by 2030, achieve full value chain carbon neutrality by 2040, and reach net zero across all scopes by 2050—urging the manufacturing sector and other industries to follow suit. Recently, TIME Magazine has hailed Schneider Electric as the “Most Sustainable Company in the World”.

PRSP Celebrates Diversity in Workplace Communication at its 2nd GMM

Right to Care Card

To celebrate #PrideMonth, the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) invited communication experts at its 2nd General Membership Meeting (GMM) last June 28 to talk about the importance of championing diversity in workplace communication as well as fostering an inclusive environment.

Dubbed “Speak Out, Stand Out: Championing Diversity in Workplace Communication,” the event held at the DivinaLaw offices in Makati City featured key speakers from MullenLowe TREYNA, the agency that won last year's Grand Anvil Award for the Quezon City Gender and Development Council's Right to Care Card.

The “Right to Care Card,” which was passed into an ordinance by the Quezon City Council in February this year, now works as a Special Power of Attorney (SPA) card that can grant medical-decision making rights to queer couples. It serves as portable proof that having the right to care for your loved ones should not be limited to a specific gender.

Spearheading the discussion was Jam Pascual, a seasoned copywriter at MullenLowe TREYNA, who talked about how the concept for the campaign all began. He shared, “What is care? Our team wanted to get the idea across that the ‘Right to Care’ card relates deeply to ideas and experiences that the average Filipino can understand. We wanted to convey the importance of such concepts as pag-aalaga and malasakit.”

Three other communication experts shared their insights about the initiative, with each one emphasizing how authentic story-telling and using just the right words to communicate the card’s basic concept of “the right to care” among partners – regardless of sexual orientation – is key to the success of the program.

“A factor in the Right to Care initiative’s success is its straightforward concept -- the basic premise of allowing human beings to care for one another. The support and recognition it had been getting may be attributed to simple, authentic, and heartfelt storytelling,” explained Gerald Lim, PR Head of Accounts at MullenLowe TREYNA.

“But of course, communications can only do so much! We also need the support of the community for diversity and inclusivity to flourish,” he added.

Sharing insights from a legal perspective, DivinaLaw Associate Atty. Joshy Aguilar stated, “I think we should be more empathic towards the plight of others. Just because you don't experience the same struggle does not mean that it does not exist or that it’s not real. Even the Supreme Court held that the 1987 Philippine Constitution is capable of accommodating a contemporaneous understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics or SOGIESC.”

Krystel Ybañez, a Senior Art Director at MullenLowe TREYNA, for her part, shared, “The team behind Right to Care is made up of queers and allies. We have brave and supportive leaders in the office who encouraged us to make this happen. That’s why diversity, equality, and inclusion are very important in workplace communication.”

PRSP continues to uphold the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion, recognizing their importance in effective workplace communication and community support. As part of the organization’s #PRforAll theme this year, the alliance is now actively encouraging all communication practitioners to champion the values of diversity, equality and inclusivity in their respective fields.

The Asian Banking and Finance Awards remains as Asia Pacific region's most prestigious awards programme for banks and annually recognizes the industry's outstanding players. The Asian Banking & Finance Awards offers a platform for banks, like EastWest, to showcase their innovative solutions, products, services, and deals that have proven to be game-changers in the industry.

Award-Winning Innovation

Since its launch in 2020, ESTA has been redefining the digital banking experience for EastWest Bank’s credit cardholders, marking a significant milestone in the bank’s commitment to technological advancement and customer service excellence. Key Features of ESTA

Designed to cater to the modern-day banking needs of its users, ESTA provides full-service functionality equivalent to a mobile app or web portal for credit card services, with several enhanced features. Users can access real-time transaction and balance displays, view unbilled, current, and historical transactions, and request limit increases, supplementary cards, and points redemption. Additionally, they can lock and unlock accounts in real-time for security purposes, fulfill installment conversions immediately, and update customer information on the spot. The platform also allows for promotions search and display, submission of customer service support tickets with two-way capability, and querying of EastWest credit card product features and related information through ChatGPT.

Monday, June 24, 2024

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), through the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP), proudly held its special Independence Day celebration event during the national holiday, themed 'Freedom from Basura.' This initiative was staged to further promote environmental awareness and encourage the community to adopt good waste management practices.

Event highlights for the special day included the following activities:

Freedom (from Basura) Wall: Visitors were invited to write their commitment to a greener and cleaner Philippines on the Freedom Wall. Participants then peeled off a plantable giveaway from the wall and planted it in a seedling pot provided at the booth. This activity symbolized the collective efforts of Filipinos towards achieving environmental sustainability.

Role-Trash Trivia: Participants were given the chance to spin a roulette and answer questions or trivia related to proper waste management practices. The trivia questions were categorized into easy, moderately difficult, and difficult levels, offering a fun and educational experience for all ages. Successful participants received special prizes.

Segre-game Time: This interactive game challenged players to shoot blocks with images of different types of solid waste into the corresponding trash bins labeled for proper segregation. This engaging activity aimed to reinforce the importance of waste segregation and recycling.

Displayed Products from Solid Waste Processing Technologies: The event showcased innovative products produced through various solid waste processing technologies. Attendees had the opportunity to see Eco Bricks made by the Solid Waste Granulator and Brick Making Facility, Cocopots produced by the Cocopot Making Machine and Decorticator, Compost generated by the Biowaste Converter, and Charcoal Briquettes and Lilipots created by the Water Hyacinth Processing Facility. These products highlighted the potential of waste materials to be transformed into valuable resources, emphasizing the importance of sustainable waste management practices.

“This past Independence Day, we celebrated not only our freedom as a nation but also our commitment to freeing our environment from waste. The recent 'Freedom from Basura' initiative reflects our dedication to fostering a culture of responsible waste management and environmental stewardship among our communities. By participating in these kinds of activities, we continue to collectively contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable Metro Manila,” said MMDA-SWMO Head and MMFMP Component 2 Project Director Dir. Josias E. Syquimsiam, Jr.

The MMDA-MMFMP booth was staged at Luneta Park for a whole day during Independence Day, as the public was encouraged to join in all the festivities and participate in the various activities designed to promote environmental consciousness and community engagement. Almost a thousand IEC materials were also distributed to around 500 booth visitors during the event.
