GPULP Scholarship Foundation names 24 new scholars

Thursday, August 22, 2024

Brothers Gregorio L. Uy and Samuel L. Uy, CPA, RGC (top center), founders of the Gregorio P. Uy & Lee Peng Scholarship Foundation (GPULP Scholarship Foundation), introduce its 2024 scholars during the ‘LF: Scholar’ awarding ceremony held recently at the Isabela State University Cauayan Campus.

The Gregorio P. Uy & Lee Peng Scholarship Foundation (GPULP Scholarship Foundation) has finally found its newest batch of scholars. These deserving students are set to receive full financial assistance and other means of support until they graduate and take their licensure exams.

The new scholars are (in no particular order) Jhon Ace De Vera, Cassandra Bacani, Clarisel Baccay, Ma. Clarisse Neri Cuaresma, Danny Dela Cruz, Edgar Daiz Jr., Krishelle Radine Ebreo, Ronalyn Languido, Aristotle Lee Maramag, Jeftee Obena, Janelle Keith Pascua, Irish Santos, Angelito Soriano, Angeli Villamar, Jolina Villanueva, Daryl Albano, Dominic Francisco, King Marion Apil, Jhanelle Creyzha Arteta, Daryl Jay Molina, Kristine Joy Onnagan, Mark Vincent Parinas, Lebron James Romero, and Adrean Faith Viernes. They study at the Philippine Normal University – North, Isabela State University (ISU – Cauayan and San Mariano campuses), and Cagayan State University – Carig.

“From the original 18 scholars, we have expanded the list to 24 new scholars since more applicants have qualified at this time. It is our ardent hope that they will use this opportunity to forge their path to success and someday pay it forward. We are truly excited to embark on this journey with our scholars and their families, and to witness the great things they will do for society,” said GPULP Scholarship Foundation Vice President Michael Uy.

Apart from the holistic support for the scholars, their parents will also receive life skills training monthly. This way, the assistance is inclusive and sustainable for the entire family.

‘Set for the future’

Founded by businessmen brothers Gregorio Uy Jr. and Samuel Uy, the GPULP Scholarship Foundation has been extending grants to excellent yet underprivileged students in Isabela and Cagayan. It was named after their parents Gregorio P. Uy and Lee Peng.

In the last school year alone, 18 scholars have graduated, seven of which received Latin honors. Some are currently doing their review in preparation for their respective Board Examinations. All expenses during this time are still covered by the GPULP Scholarship Foundation.

To date, the Foundation has a record of 100% passing rate in the Licensure Examination for Teachers, Civil Engineers Licensure Examination, and Agriculturists Licensure Examination among its scholars. Its Accountancy graduates have a 96% passing rate record, while its Agricultural Engineering graduates are at 91%.

Among these achievers, two were regional top-notchers in their respective Board Exams back in 2018. Alumni also enjoy high chances of employability in both the public and private sectors, a testament to the continued success of the program.

Alumnus Philip Salvador of the ISU Echague Main Campus was invited to the “LF: Scholar” Awarding Ceremony recently to impart a message of inspiration. He is now a Certified Public Accountant working for The Salvation Army Social Services Inc.

“This scholarship does not only help us financially but also supports us morally for us to really achieve our dreams. The monthly sessions taught us the value of discipline and motivated us to strive for excellence,” he said.

Among his peers, three are currently in supervisory and senior positions.

“To our dear scholars, the road ahead of you is still long so don’t let the gas run out—your passion and fire in whatever you do. Yes, it will be hard, but it will be worth it. I would like to thank the humble benefactors of the GPULPSF. Thank you for your generosity and support to us,” Salvador added.

The Arus Kualan Traditional School: A Journey of Preserving Culture, Empowering Futures

Wednesday, August 9, 2023

Sakolah Adat

In the heart of the lush landscapes of East Borneo, an extraordinary institution stands as a beacon of hope for indigenous communities confronting the challenges of vanishing forests. Welcome to the Sakolah Adat (Traditional School) Arus Kualan, where nature herself is the revered teacher, and the pursuit of knowledge intertwines with safeguarding the essence of Dayak, one of Indonesia’s oldest indigenous communities.

As these communities grapple with the threat of losing their forests and the traditional wisdom passed down through generations, Arus Kualan emerges as a transformative force, empowering individuals like Selsi and Elis, aged 12 and 14, to become champions of their cultural heritage. Their journey epitomizes the dynamic impact of education in shaping inclusive and sustainable communities, promising a brighter future for Borneo's rich traditions and environment.

Selsi, the 12-year-old prodigy, has found her passion in teaching the art of playing Sampe, a revered traditional instrument. Beyond music, she also imparts her knowledge of ancient games and the intricate art of traditional weaving, fostering a sense of unity among her peers. Selsi shares her enthusiasm, saying, "Arus Kualan has given me the opportunity to not only learn about my culture but also to inspire others to embrace our traditions. It fills my heart with joy to see my peers learning and preserving our heritage."

Meanwhile, Elis, with deep ancestral ties, carries the weight of preserving the knowledge of traditional medicines. Inspired by her wise grandmother, who is also a member of the indigenous Dayak community, Elis passionately embraces the role of a healer. Moreover, her fluency in English transforms her into a cultural ambassador, warmly welcoming foreign visitors and guiding them through the wonders of Arus Kualan. Elis shares her vision, stating, "I want to bridge the gap between our cultural heritage and the world. By sharing our knowledge of traditional medicine and arts, we can create a deeper appreciation for our identity."

Founded in 2014, the Arus Kualan traditional school branches stretch far and wide across East Kalimantan as a beacon of cultural preservation, creating a diverse community of learners eager to preserve their Dayak heritage. Rooted in the belief that local wisdom is the key to sustaining cultural legacy, this non-formal education institution imparts the art of traditional dances, music, and handicrafts to its enthusiastic students. Founded on the philosophy that "alam raya adalah sekolah dan setiap orang adalah guru" (nature is a school, and everyone is a teacher), Arus Kualan embraces learners of all ages.

Over the past decade, Arus Kualan has witnessed a growing interest in its mission, with approximately 350 students recorded from 2014 to 2023. At present, around 168 students actively participate in the school's transformative programs. According to Plorentina Dessy, Founder of Arus Kualan, "Our school believes in the transformative power of education and that everyone, regardless of age, can be both a student and a teacher."

Safeguarding Heritage through Environmental Advocacy

For generations, the Dayak people have cherished their lands, viewing every tree, river, and creature as part of their identity. Arus Kualan imparts this sacred knowledge, instilling love and respect for nature in its students.

The loss of forests in Borneo threatens indigenous communities' traditional knowledge and way of life. Relying heavily on forests for sustenance and resources, diminishing forests endanger their well-being and cultural ties. Urgent conservation efforts and sustainable practices are crucial to preserve Borneo's forests and safeguard their heritage for future generations.

Amid deforestation and climate change challenges, Arus Kualan's focus on environmental stewardship becomes vital. Integrating conservation teachings into its curriculum, the school equips students with resilience and cultural values. Immersing students in nature through jungle treks and wildlife observations fosters profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Selsi and Elis embrace Arus Kualan's teachings, understanding the importance of protecting their forests for traditional medicine and community well-being. Arus Kualan empowers them to safeguard their cultural heritage and the environment for a sustainable future. Together, they work to preserve the intricate tapestry of their cultural heritage and the diversity of Borneo's ecosystem.

Selsi remarks, "The more I learn about nature, the more I feel connected to our cultural roots. Arus Kualan has taught me that we are guardians of our environment, and it is our responsibility to protect it for future generations." Elis also added, "I believe that we hold the key to safeguarding our cultural heritage and the environment. Through hands-on experiences with nature's wonders, we can foster a profound appreciation for our traditions and the interconnectedness of all living beings."

Literacy Movement: Empowering Through Education

Recognizing that literacy is the gateway to knowledge and empowerment, Arus Kualan places immense emphasis on building strong reading and writing skills among its students. The foundation believes that literacy is a cornerstone of personal growth, enabling individuals to articulate their thoughts and aspirations effectively. With a keen understanding of the transformative power of literacy, Arus Kualan endeavors to equip its students with the tools to become confident communicators and critical thinkers.

To this end, literacy classes are held for children to learn to read, write, and even foreign languages and computers. These classes are designed to ignite curiosity and expand the students' horizons, enabling them to connect with the world beyond their immediate surroundings. Through literacy, Arus Kualan aims to empower its students to become active participants in a globalized society, where communication and understanding of diverse perspectives are key.

Selsi and Elis exemplify the transformative potential of this education. As they delve into academic excellence, they are simultaneously sowing the seeds of cultural preservation. Their success becomes a testament to the interwoven fabric of cultural heritage and personal growth fostered at Arus Kualan.

Shaping a Brighter Future

The Arus Kualan Foundation continues to be the driving force behind this transformative education, shaping a brighter future for both individuals and their cultural heritage. With a commitment to empowering young minds, the foundation nurtures dreams and aspirations, just as it did for Selsi and Elis. Plorentina Dessy expresses her pride, stating, "Seeing Selsi and Elis embrace their roles as teachers and ambassadors fills us with hope for the future. They represent the heart and soul of Arus Kualan's mission."

These two students, now also proud teachers, are the catalysts of their culture, they inspire hope and dedication in the next generation, passing down the wisdom they have gained at the school. They walk hand in hand with their peers and students, embracing the role of nurturing both minds and souls.

In the embrace of Arus Kualan, the Dayak community has found the key to preserving its heritage while embracing a sustainable future. Selsi and Elis embody the spirit of this transformative institution, illuminating the path for a brighter tomorrow. As Elis once said, "In the embrace of Arus Kualan, I found my roots, my purpose. Now, as a teacher, I am determined to keep our heritage alive for generations to come." With such dedicated individuals, the heart of Dayak culture will continue to beat strong, nourished by the wisdom of Arus Kualan. Their journey is a testament to the enduring power of education and cultural preservation, fueling a legacy that will stand tall through the ages.

Plorentina Dessy also hopes that Arus Kualan can serve as a model for indigenous communities in other countries, especially in the Southeast Asian region, where reckless modernization poses a significant threat to the survival and cultural identity of native communities. Dessy also envisions that once successfully adopted by indigenous communities in other nations, programs similar to her school can receive protection and support from local governments. For instance, in the Philippines, there has been support through the establishment of institutions and supporting programs like the Institute of Living Traditions and The Cultural Education Program Act.

"As we strive to preserve our cultural heritage and empower indigenous communities, Arus Kualan stands as a beacon of hope. My hope is that our model can inspire and protect native cultures in Southeast Asia and beyond, navigating the challenges of modernization while cherishing our identity and traditions." closed Dessy.

Mapua University Global Classrooms

Mapúa University, in collaboration with Arizona State University, enhances their program offerings through its Global Classrooms.

It has been said that knowledge is power. In this modern digital-driven world, the access to information to fuel this knowledge has been greater than ever. Joining the workforce armed with the tools and global perspective needed to navigate this space is the golden ticket. This was the impetus for Mapúa University to create a more holistic campus experience to prepare its students for a fast-paced future. Their collaboration with Arizona State University enhances these program offerings through its Global Classrooms, where the world is, literally at their students’ fingertips.

School work, especially for college students, can be quite challenging. Trying to find that balance between attending classes, passing tests, doing extra-curricular work, setting goals, and spending time with family and friends can be overwhelming. Not to mention growing up and navigating the greater space beyond the four walls of the classroom. Psychology major Jade Vincent Raymundo describes the student experience as “Keeping informed as it will be our sword and shield in a world full of uncertainties. There are lots of opportunities everywhere, and those who know about them will be able to utilize and grab each opportunity.”

Mapúa University, being among the top educational institutions in the country, used these markers as the foundation for the business and health science courses they crafted with Arizona University. The students also have the chance to benefit even more from key pillars - Global Immersion, Real-Experiential Learning, Digital Mastery and Advanced and Immersive Facilities. “One of the good things about studying business at Mapúa is the abundance of resources and endless learning opportunities. It allows us to continuously absorb and apply our knowledge, making our learning journey seamless and dynamic,” points out Business Administration student Angelique France Santiago. “Moreover, Mapúa provides various free resources that greatly benefit business students, further enriching our education.”

The students also have the chance to benefit even more from key pillars - Global Immersion, Real-Experiential Learning, Digital Mastery and Advanced and Immersive Facilities.

One of the most important innovations brought about by the partnership are the Global Classrooms, driving an internationalized education for its students. They now have the opportunity to share a synchronous learning experience with peers from all over the world, with classes being led by professors from the ASU-Cintana Alliance, while maintaining affordability. “If our students can’t afford to go to the US, then the US can come to their classroom.” shares Dr. Jagdeep Jassel, Dean of Mapua’s business school. “We have Global classroom initiatives and global signature courses which will be taught by an international faculty.” Business Administration student Janna Fel Mari A. Lucea echoes how valuable this resource has been to her as a student. “The presence of ASU faculty brought a fresh perspective and an international dimension to the classroom, enriching the overall educational environment,” adding positive impact on my learning experience.” She also found the active learning techniques like group discussions, case studies, and collaborative projects as critical in encouraging student participation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Alongside the professors of ASU are special sessions by industry leaders and subject matter experts, helping them gain valuable global perspectives on various fields of study.

The Global Classrooms have become a cost-effective way to connect students with ASU’s renowned faculty, given that Mapúa also has campuses in Laguna and in Mindanao. Access to the best resource speakers is made possible with minimal impact on tuition and fees. This platform also provides students with access to over 600 online courses offered by ASU's network – enabling them to develop a worldview mindset and prepare themselves for a thriving career. To this, Lucea adds, “The collaboration between local and international professors provided a globalized educational experience and expanded our horizons, enhancing our academic growth and preparing us for a global workforce.”

Mapúa University takes pride in being able to offer students with a unique experience during their time on campus. Access to globalized and internationalized learning sessions via the Global Classrooms, in collaboration with the ASU-Cintana Alliance, has been a game changer in business and health science education. “Mapúa University provided me with a nurturing and stimulating learning environment that had not only helped me grow academically but has also shaped me into being versatile,” explains accountancy major Aliyah Jem Evangelista. “Meeting people from different programs and departments not only expanded my knowledge beyond my field but it has also exposed me to how our respective fields intersect.” As they approach graduation, these students are guaranteed one thing – a firm foundation driven by Mapúa’s key learning pillars, enhanced by ASU’s worldview, that will set them up for future success. “Growing up can have many other different meanings,” is how Dr. Jag presents it. “How do we embrace digital? How do we embrace international components? How do we embrace real life work experience? We need to volunteer for this. We want to encourage our students and teachers to opt for this challenge.”

Key Measures Schools Must Take to Meet Demands of Gen Z Learners

Gen Z Learners

Inspired by the current mindset of new generation learners, Quipper list reasons why schools must take learning to the next level by adapting to them

Learning is dynamic and changes landscape as the world evolves. As it happens, the sector faces a new generation of learners: Generation Z or Gen Zs.

Born between 1997 to 2013, this generation grew up in the digital era, surrounded by the latest innovations and instant access to information. They are deemed digital natives and have unique learning preferences. As they grew, they witnessed firsthand how technology changed education in many ways and now look beyond the four walls of a classroom, championing technology-driven learning. That is why it is a must nowadays for schools to offer dynamic and adaptive learning methods for them.

And to help schools apply tech-based education to their curriculum, Quipper, one of the best LMS in the Philippines, provides a list of how to meet the educational demands of Gen Z learners.

Promote collaboration and interactivity. Gen Z learners thrive in collaborative environments that encourage active participation. They are all for human interaction and connection, either virtual or offline.

By implementing measures that foster collaboration and interactivity, educators will encourage learners to value teamwork which they will need in their future endeavors. Educators should integrate group projects, discussions, and hands-on activities into the curriculum to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Create a personalized learning environment. Gen Z learners value customized experiences tailored to their individual needs and interests. Schools should employ adaptive learning technologies and strategies that allow students to learn at their own pace and explore topics of interest.

This can be achieved through personalized learning platforms like Quipper, which provides adaptive assessments and individualized feedback. Quipper has automated checking of students’ activities and an item analysis feature to monitor class performance.

Foster a student-centered approach through active communication. Schools must adopt a student-centered approach to education that places students as the top priority in the learning process. This means considering their opinions, interests, and feedback.

Educators can achieve this by prioritizing open and active communication with the students, hearing their concerns, and encouraging their voice and choice. Quipper has a built in Messaging feature which teachers can use to communicate with their students to remind them of their assignments and provide private feedback to improve their output and performance.

Cultivate their digital literacy skills. While there is an abundance of information that students can get for free, and it is technically accessible at all times, educators should still monitor and control all online activities. Schools should conduct free digital literacy training to help them navigate and evaluate information effectively.

Schools should incorporate digital literacy education into their curriculum, teaching students to critically assess sources, distinguish between reliable and unreliable information, and engage in responsible digital citizenship. By equipping Gen Z learners with these skills, schools empower them to become discerning digital content consumers and creators.

The methodologies in teaching are bound to be changed, and it is high time for schools to adapt to these and embrace the digital age. Through technology, schools can empower learners by fostering collaboration, personalizing learning experiences, creating a student-centered environment, and cultivating digital literacy skills.

And Quipper, with its innovative teaching and learning technology, can help schools cater to the needs of new generation learners. Their technology-driven platform prioritizes the growth of students—one that adapts to the changing landscape of education. With Quipper, Gen Z learners will eventually thrive beyond four walls and be equipped to become lifelong learners.

Bicol University Taps Globe Business to Drive Academe Innovation

Monday, May 22, 2023

Bicol University

As Bicol Region’s leading tertiary institution, Bicol University (BU), for the past 50 years, has solidified its premier reputation by consistently implementing its core values of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service in its students, teachers, staff, and community. Amid today’s changing times and growing digital landscape, the university continues to thrive through its drive for innovation with the help of a strong partnership with technology enabler Globe Business.

Like many other institutions who faced challenges that arose from the pandemic, Bicol University realized the need for more robust digital solutions to strengthen their operational capacity as they aim to keep improving and to continuously deliver quality education amidst all adversities.

“Technology brought us all together: administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders,” says Aris Ordoñez, Bicol University’s ICT director. “The pandemic held us back a little, but did not totally limit us. Technology provided us a way to continue what we have started despite the challenges of the times.”

Specifically, what helped Bicol University take its business forward were two critical Globe Business digital solutions: M360 and Zoom for Education.

M360 is a web-based, multi-channel messaging platform that allows you to send branded messages with a sender ID instead of a mobile number, which builds trust and credibility for your recipients. Top private and public universities across the country use M360 to send out important announcements to their students, faculty members, and administrators.

Bicol University used this to connect with their school community during their vaccination campaign. They also use it for internal and external communication among stakeholders to send out memos, invitations, announcements of academic meetings and activities like enrollment, upcoming school programs. These SMS blasts are completely customizable, making it easy for Bicol University to tailor fit its messaging to its audience.

Meanwhile, Zoom for Education is a popular video conferencing tool that creates better engagement among students, faculty, and staff, fostering a collaborative learning environment for everyone. It is currently being enjoyed by a handful of academes nationwide, including private schools and state universities.

Bicol University used Zoom for Education during the height of distance learning to accommodate up to 1000 attendees with a large meeting room add-on. This helped them to continue delivering quality education through online platforms and conducting meetings or events with bigger audiences.

With these tools, Ordoñez says Bicol University is now more confident to face a tech-driven future as the school continues to shape the country’s next topnotchers in various fields of academic expertise.

“Technology and digitalization has always been a part of Bicol University. We always aim to improve in this aspect, and our ultimate goal is to become an ingenious campus on top of being a world-class university,” Ordoñez adds.

Globe Business, on the other hand, will continue, through this partnership, to fulfill its mission of championing solution-based services to schools in order to restore the hope that education brings to Filipino students and their families.

“The pandemic became one of the catalysts for many institutions to discover new ways of learning, operating and collaborating through digitalization,” says KD Dizon, MSME Group Head, Globe Business. “With our digital solutions and services, we aim to support the education sector in creating a more empowered and future-proof learning environment to uplift the lives of Filipinos.”

AECON 2023

What awaits on the other side of learning recovery?

This is the question the Annual Educators’ Congress (AECON) 2023 recognized and answered during the 2-day event, held virtually recently. Under the banner “Learning Recovery to Learning Resilience,” AECON attracted over 20,000 education thought leaders, policy-makers, and practitioners to convene and discuss emerging education topics and trends, and most importantly, to continue the efforts toward learning resilience.

AECON 2023 endeavored to support DepEd’s objective of expanding the knowledge base of learning recovery by fostering resilience among learners and education ecosystems. Drawing inspiration from the agency’s 2030 Basic Education Development Plan (BEDP), the event touched on themes of quality and inclusive education, learner empowerment, and positive learning environments.

“In a sense, this is an affirmation for us that what we are doing contributes to larger nationwide goals,” REX Chief Executive Officer Don Timothy I. Buhain said in his opening speech. “This affirmation fuels us to be more eager and willing contributors—a feeling and sentiment we wish to share with all of you.”

Learning from the experts

AECON featured renowned local and international speakers across different disciplines. Delivering the keynote address was Hon. Gina O. Gonong, DepEd’s Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching.

The plenary sessions kicked off with Dr. Yolanda Quijano, Chief of Party of Project Gabay, covering the topic “Expanding Access to Education for Groups in Situations of Disadvantage to Ensure Inclusive and Equitable Quality Service Delivery.” Dr. Quijano highlighted how disadvantaged youth often have limited access to formal education. She named children in geographically isolated or disadvantaged areas (GIDA), youth from indigenous cultural communities (ICC), Muslim students, and persons with disabilities as some of the sectors that are left behind.

Also present was Dr. Alison Atwell, an International Whole School Improvement Consultant, in a session on the “Teacher's Tool Box: Six Essential Tools to Achieve Comprehensive Student Growth.” Dr. Atwell elaborated on different instruments education professionals could use in optimizing classroom success, namely, creative interactive teaching, positive physical school environment, inclusive classrooms, participative shared leadership, supportive school culture, and engagement with family and community.

AECON capped off its plenary sessions with Dr. Amy Berry, an International Education Consultant and author of “Reimagining Student Engagement: from Disrupting to Driving”, and her talk on “Pivoting to Quality, Ensuring That All Learners Attain Learning Standards in Every Key Stage in the K to 12 Program.” Berry focused on what she called building blocks that develop the language, partnership, and process of engagement within one’s classrooms. Each aspect was coupled with concrete actions such as the development of teachers’ effective communication, collaboration with stakeholders, and activation of fundamental skills that could facilitate learning.

In all, Ms. Rita Atienza, Director of the Ateneo Teacher Center, facilitated the Q&A segments after each plenary session.

Paving the road for recovery and resilience

The congress formally concluded with a synthesis session from Dr. Jerome Buenviaje, Dean of the College of Education, University of the Philippines - Diliman. "We have to understand that resilience is a weapon to fight for empowering our learners [and] creating positive learning environments, so that we will attain quality and inclusive education," he said. "In looking forward to learning resilience, tatayo tayo, dahil tayo ay Pilipino (we will recover, because we are Filipinos).”

Over the years, AECON has served as a testament to Rex Education’s commitment of service to the public and the country. “The worst may have been behind us, but the journey to learning recovery and on to learning resilience is far from over. And what a joy to have you all as traveling companions,” Buhain said of AECON attendees, who he addressed as Edukampyons, or champions of education. “Ultimately, it will be all of us who will make the difference.”

Through AECON and the strength of Edukampyons, Rex Education remains committed to the journey, from learning recovery to learning resilience.
